EU Exit Preparedness • Preparedness report and impact log went to Policy and Resources Committee in February • Now holding weekly meetings with colleagues across the council to update the impact log and report on progress against any actions/mitigations • We are feeding information on our current concerns, risks and challenges into MHCLG on a weekly basis (alongside all other London boroughs) • This is a two-way dialogue where MHCLG also report back to us on any key developments or useful information coming out of central government Advice for citizens and businesses available on the Council website https://www.barnet.gov.uk/your-council/advice-citizens-and-businesses-exiting-european-union

  4. Steering Group Meeting • 6 June – Youth Zone / Unitas – Emergency Planning • September – new Council offices – Mental Health • December – venue TBC – Food Security Agreed to moving to 4 rather than 3 a year

  5. Tarling Road Open Day 12th Match11am-2pm Tarling Road Community Centre is a new community centre located on Tarling Road in East Finchley. The centre has a variety of multifunction rooms, and Barnet Council is inviting groups to hire spaces on a daily or weekly basis. On Tuesday 12 March, the centre will be open for previews between 11am-2pm for community groups and members of the public who wish to view the space available for hire at the centre. A table of room costs per hour will be available to help inform decisions.  This will be a great opportunity to see the space available to hire so we look forward to meeting everyone who may wish to attend. The Young Barnet Foundation (YBF) is a membership movement set up to help grow activities and services for our children and young people.  We believe the children and young people need safe space to grow and develop into resilient adults.  For this, all children and young people need opportunities for learning and fun, beyond family and formal education, building strong trusted relationships with adults and their peers; leading to broadened networks, increased confidence and valuable life skills.

VSCF Support – what are we trying to achieve? • Developing a strong collective voice for the sector • Brokering deeper understanding and relationships with statutory partners • Building relationships with business • Supporting sector resilience through direct support and signposting • Developing partnerships

How we are working?  • Surveying the sector to develop a needs-based response • CEO network to work strategically to build relationships • Engaging FSB to build relationships between charities and small businesses • Working with specialist subcontractors on partnership development and training • New web resource including time-limited free legal advice for sector • Regular newsletter around policy and opportunities • Surgeries in response to need

  21. Volunteer Brokerage Service Since 2015 Volunteering Barnet has been the Borough’s Nationally Accredited Volunteer Centre

Volunteer Brokerage Service Volunteering Barnet • Promoting volunteering across the Borough opportunities through our website, newsletters, social media, one-to-one meetings and community outreach events. • Training organisations on best practice in volunteer management through on-line resources and one-to-one surgeries. • Providing direct support though email and phone line, one-to-one drop-ins to facilitate an uptake of volunteering in Barnet. Supporting those who live work or study in Barnet to become involved in volunteering Outreach programme – targeted and public Supports Training and Volunteering best practice

How we are working: • Launched a new website to improve our communication and service access • Improved brokerage platform for organisations on volunteer connect • Regular communications via newsletter and online campaigns linking our work with Barnet Together • Monthly coffee mornings, surgeries and training for organisations • Bi-annual volunteer coordinators forum for peer support and training • Regular drop-ins, in locations across the Borough • Targeted engagement e.g. with the youth sector through workshops and support at schools and colleges, working with youth groups/organisations Supporting those who live work or study in Barnet to become involved in volunteering Outreach programme – targeted and public Supports Training and Volunteering best practice

Volunteering Barnet - What happens next? • ESV - Developing our ESV/ Probono offering for Council employees, SMEs and organisations • Communications - Increasing our social media presence to maximise use of our services and web resources • Training - Developing our training and support offer building on the VCS Survey • Strengthen our partnership - approach to improve volunteer service reach and its outcomes in Barnet, with our partnership outreach programme • Planning our key campaigns – Launch of Barnet Together, Volunteers Week (1-7 June) • Evidence our impact Supporting those who live work or study in Barnet to become involved in volunteering Outreach programme – targeted and public Supports Training and Volunteering best practice

Barnet Community Directory – Admin and Outreach Aims to increase, strengthen and develop community activity across Barnet: • Supporting residents and community groups to become better connected • Raise the profile of groups, organisations and their projects • Currently 279 VCS organisation and groups listed

  26. Barnet Community Directory What’s Happening Next? • Annual refresh of the directory - Ensuring correct and accurate information is available • Promotion and targeted outreach to new and local groups • Support the council, as they develop an API

Aims to increase, strengthen and develop community activity across Barnet: • Supporting residents and community groups to become better connected, reducing demand on services • Currently 276 VCS organisation and groups listed Priorities: • Ensuring correct and accurate information is available, for practitioners and commissioners • Outreach to encourage under the radar groups • Support the council, as they develop an API

What have we learnt? • As expected needs and views of the sector are varied and represent its difference. • Our priorities • Responding to the increase demand for services and prioritising Fundraising and seeking alternative revenue sources • Developing communications – e.g. Using social media • The right training delivered and low or minimal cost • Demonstrating impact and the value it bring • Recruit and retain volunteers, including skilled volunteers • Building effective partnerships • Working with local businesses
