  3. Coaching Philosophy Be more concerned with your character than with your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are. (John Wooden) My Role • Be a Great Teacher (Loyalty, Integrity, and Teamwork) • Teach a Strong Work Ethic (Expect the Best) • Instill the Drive to Win and Excel (Goals) • Care About Each Individual as a Person (Role, Empower, Realistic)

  4. WINNING PHILOSOPHY There are winners and then in a greater sense there are winners. That greater sense of winning is the one that East Valley Baseball is devoted to. The essential difference between the two degrees of winning is the development of character. We truly believe that victory cannot be achieved unless there is a mesh of winning character and winning baseball skills. That mesh will produce clutch performances on the field, in the classroom, and in life. In order to produce this person that is both a winner as an individual and as a baseball player we believe that our players must be goal-oriented (prioritized: spiritual, academic, attitudinal, and athletic). Success in reaching these goals will produce, as a byproduct, the winning character we are seeking in our athletes. As coaches we will therefore be concerned with the whole person. Goal achievement in all areas of our players' lives is a part of our game. Another important part of East Valley Baseball is that we will not take any shortcuts to be successful. We believe in hard work. This, as much as anything else, will be responsible for the success that we will have. If a player cannot make the commitment to work then there are other activities that he might find enjoyment doing. This work is part of our game and is essential to winning. The last part of our philosophy of winning that we deam invaluable is a loving enthusiasm for the game of baseball. You have got to love the game to be a East Valley Baseball player. This love for the game is expressed in an enthusiasm for giving of yourself to the game, your teammates, and your school. In the long run, the person who receives the most is the player himself. East Valley Baseball is devoted to winning. This winning is best exemplified not by scores or records which are truly commendable in themselves, but by the character and attitude of every player in our program.

  6. The East Valley baseball program is built like a fist….. R E S P O N S I B I L I T Y C O M M U N I C A T I O N C A R I N G T R U S T P R I D E ...complete with communication, caring, trust, pride, and collective responsibility—each as a separate finger on that fist. Any one individually is important. But all of them together are unbeatable. It’s the easiest thing in the world to understand, but the hardest thing to achieve. This fist makes individuals part of something bigger. If we as coaches, players, and parents can achieve this, success will be just around the corner.

  7. Player’s Role • Practice Theory • Intense: Preparation removes pressure and builds confidence. • Be There: Fundraising, practice, camp, etc. • Teamwork • Out of position? Sacrifice builds character. • Individual accomplishments are a byproduct rather than the goal of genuine teamwork.

  8. Team Contract 2007 • I agree to be on time and present at all team functions. If some emergency or illness should occur that would prevent me from fulfilling this obligation, I will contact a coach personally, and ahead of time. • I agree to behave in a manner that promotes the reputation of the high school and this program. • I agree to fulfill all my academic obligations by going to class on time daily (unless emergency or illness denies me this opportunity) and completing all necessary work. • I agree to make the team more important than myself and to individually sacrifice whatever is needed for the good of the team. • I agree to control my mouth and my emotions. Swearing, throwing helmets, bats, or any other equipment is not acceptable. • I will leave umpires and opponents alone. I will talk with my bat, and my glove, and not my mouth. • I agree to keep confidential the affairs of the team and to present my teammates in a positive manner. (Backbiting will destroy our team unity.) • I agree to maintain a groomed and clean appearance that is acceptable to the standards of our coaching staff and my teammates. • I agree to take care of all equipment issued to me and to return equipment at season's end. Should any or all equipment get stolen or lost, I agree to pay replacement price. • I agree to use only my own equipment and to never borrow from a teammate without asking permission. I will never steal anything from a teammate or this program. • I agree to hustle at all times. It takes no athletic ability to hustle; only ATTITUDE! • NOTE: Failure to comply with any of the team agreements will result in discipline action. This action will depend on the individual violation and could result in ultimate dismissal from the program.

Player Misconceptions Criticism puts someone down, correction means I want to help. • Punishment is for the punisher (to make them feel better). • Discipline always has the other persons’ best interest in mind. Development of Champions off of the Field Live in the present, not the past, and let the coach worry about the future.

  12. Minimum of 10 Cases of Juice • 2 bags of apples equates to one case of juice. • Money Goes Towards: • Field Maintenance • Coats, Helmets, Bats, etc. • Incentives? • Due Date: • Mock-Turtleneck Required • Make Checks Payable to Prostock • Purchase Hats Separately • Take check to EVHS office, bring coach receipt (have check addressed to EVHS).
