  1. Mobile Payment Forum – Business Model Sep 15, 2007 Sanjay Bhargava sanjay@eko.co.in

  2. Set BHAG • To reach in real time with payments every resident who has a mobile phone in three years (RTNS – Real Time Net Settlement system) • To enable free consumer payments (VAP or Value Added Payments are charged). This is pretty much like basic voice calls in telecom becoming free. • To have at least 10% in cashless transactions in three years • To have at least 5% of the world payment market handled by Indian institutions in five years

  3. Themes • Excite Innovators • National priority – whitepaper • Access for investors / entrepreneurs • NMITLI - PPP • Business Model • CAPEX – REVEX – Costs tend to zero as volumes tend to infinity • Who pays? Consumer zero? Billers, Merchants, Mass Payers? • Getting the elephants to dance - Customer ownership - Slicing the pie

  4. Suggested points for discussion • Whether BHAG should be set or not? Is a national priority whitepaper good or not? • How do we get access for investors / entrepreneurs ? NMITLI - PPP can it play a role ? • Economics – How much can we leverage existing CAPEX? Is “consumer pays zero” the way to go? Country cannot be held to ransom. What will make the elephants dance?
