Background • HPV vaccine is a breakthrough, but there has been much controversy • Mandating vaccines: school entry, immigration • Concerns in public health community about competing costs and impact on Pap test usage • A consensus has yet to be reached about whether and how to promote the vaccine • State and national policy can have important impacts on vaccine awareness and vaccine usage

  3. HPV Policy Project Update • First paper: • Describes quantity and variety of HPV vaccine bills across 50 states from Jan 2006 – June 2008 • Traces the introduction, enactment, and failure to enactment of HPV vaccine bills • Data have been abstracted from all bills introduced over this time period • A complete draft of the paper has been written: • Submit to Health Affairs by end of December 2008 • Laugesen M, Mistry R, Carameli K, Needleman J, Bastani R.
