  1. Digital Animation The Animation Process of 3D Computer Graphics

  2. 3D Animation Process

  3. Story development phase • "Pitch" phase • 'Story Reel' phase • first step in editing film, unlike a live-action film

  4. Character development (1) • Concept artists(variety of artists) • trying to define the "look" of character • traditional art works (hand drawn sketch, paintings, drawings) • Single concept artist • basic design approach • Finalize design - final design • Refined design(model sheets) • Model pack

  5. Character development (2) • Technical Director (3D model builder) • also defines "range of movement", "all the controls for the final computer model“ • "articulated variables" (="avars") • "muscles" & "ligaments" of the character model • digital marionette • Animator

  6. The role of TDs (1) • Collaboration with the Art and Design teams • Development • Work with the pre-production team to develop programs and techniques to solve specific research and development problems required for the film. • Modeling • Work with the Art Department and other TD's to build sets, props, and characters for animation.

  7. The role of TDs (2) • Shading • Develop and implement look of each object with respect to texture and color. • Shots and Effects • Manage the technical aspects of the shot pipeline, including all special effects and simulations. • Lighting • Design and implement the look of each shot and use all elements above to create the final image.

  8. Qualifications of TD (1) • Graphics background • Extensive 3D computer graphics experience in the areas of modeling, lighting, and shading. Experience with commercial graphics packages, especially those which support procedural model and shader development (i.e. packages such as Maya, Houdini, RenderMan).

  9. Qualifications of TD (2) • Technical background • UNIX Operating System experience. Education in Computer Science, Mathematics or Engineering is desirable. Facility with programming languages such as C, C++, tcl, and perl is helpful. At minimum, must be comfortable in a script driven environment.

  10. Qualifications of TD (3) • Art background • An art background which shows a thorough understanding of physical motion, weight, balance, texture, color, light, and form. A good eye. Professional experience as a commercial artist a plus.
