  3. What is Key Club? First of all we are not a club dedicated to making keys (don’t worry if you were thinking that, you probably aren’t alone). Key Club aka Kiwanis is an international group of service organizations dedicated to improving the local and international communities. Kiwanis currently has over 800,000 members in more than 80 countries. The Briar Woods Key Club is committed to volunteering at local community events as well as helping out larger organizations sponsored by Kiwanis International. If you’re interested in becoming involved in community service and helping to better the community and world around you, then you’ve definitely come to the right place!

  4. What We Do Key Club supplies volunteers to community events throughout the year. These events have included school activities, community festivals, helping with pet adoptions, etc. We also hold events in the school throughout the year such as food drives and our annual blood drive.

  5. Why Should You Join? • Being a member of the BWHS Key Club gives you an opportunity to meet new people not only from the school but around the community, build leadership skills, and work together to better the community around you. • It feels good knowing you are helping a good cause. • It gives you an opportunity to expand your own world and see things from a different perspective. • It looks great on college applications! (Plus you sometimes get free stuff from events you volunteer at!)

  6. Membership Requirements Anyone interested in joining must complete the application found online on the BWHS Key Club website and turn it in along with the dues by 4:03 PM on September 11 to Ms. Frank in Room 204. Late/incomplete applications will not be accepted. To be considered a member of the BWHS Key Club you must have 40 total service hours by the end of the 2019-2020 school year, at least 15 of these must be in-club service hours. In-club hours are any Key Club sponsored or provided activity, including everything that is posted under the events tab on our website.

  7. Membership Application The membership application can be found on the Briar Woods Key Club website: https://briarwoodskeyclub.weebly.com/ or just go to the Activities page on the BWHS website and find “Key Club” Please fill out the application entirely: Sign all the documents, read through all of the application, and include your membership dues inside an envelope ($11.50 - WITHOUT T-Shirt) or ($20 - WITH T-Shirt), cash or check payable to BWHS. If you would like to use the online payment system to pay your dues, the option is available on the BWHS website. Please look for Key Club Dues. (Payment window: (Aug 28th - Sept 11th.) Please submit your completed membership application by 4:03 PM on September 11 to Ms. Frank in Room 204. LATE OR INCOMPLETE APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED - NO EXCEPTIONS.

  8. Meetings and Absences As a member of the BWHS Key Club you are expected to attend all monthly meetings. Meetings are generally held on the last Wednesday of each month in the BWHS auditorium starting at 8:30 AM. All meeting dates for the 2019-2020 school year are posted on our website. Reminders as well as information on how to sign up via Eventbrite will be sent out through Remind at least 1 day prior to all meetings. Members are only allowed 3 total absences for the entire 2019-2020 school year, regardless of if they are excused or not. The rules for members who attend the Academies of Loudoun are slightly different and are on our membership application. Meeting attendance will be updated following each monthly meeting and will be posted on our website under the Hours/Attendance tab. If you have any questions or concerns about your attendance please ask as soon as possible.

  9. Academies of Loudoun Meeting and Absences Instead of being able to miss three meetings, all ACL students will only be able to miss ONE MEETING. (Not counting the ones missed for ACL days.) All absences resulting from ACL will not affect your meeting attendance requirements but will be made up in additional service hours. Each meeting missed due to ACL will add an extra half hour of service to your hours requirements.(For example, if 4 out of the 8 monthly meetings are missed due to ACL, 2 extra hours are added to the previous requirement of 40 hours.)

  10. What Counts as Hours? • We only accept hours for service work (not, for example, donations outside of Key Club events) • We will not accept hours that are part of a school required activity or assignment. Anything done because it is mandatory is not considered volunteering. • Anything that you are paid to do is not volunteering. • Keep in mind that staff sponsors have the final say as to whether submitted hours meet the definition and spirit of service work • Most importantly, remember that if you have any questions as to whether something will count for hours, please ask us in advance More information about what counts as hours can be found on the membership application

  11. What Does Not Count as Hours? • “I walked my neighbor’s dog” • “I watched my younger brother while my parents were gone” • “I brought in canned foods for a food drive at my church” • “I tutored my best friend” • “I sold donuts to fundraise for my sports team” More information about what does not counts as hours can be found on the membership application

  12. Service Hours All service hours completed during a month must be turned in no later than4:03 PM the Friday after the monthly meeting. Late hours will not be accepted. Meeting service projects may be provided at select meetings, however be aware that not all meetings will have service projects. Do not rely on the monthly meetings to complete in-club service hours requirements. Remember the BWHS Key Club Sponsors/Officers hold the right to determine whether or not something counts as volunteer work. If you have any doubts please ask. Hours will be updated following each monthly meeting and will be posted on our website under the Hours/Attendance tab. If you have any questions or concerns about the number of hours posted please ask as soon as possible.

  13. Event Proposals Do you have an idea for a project, or know of an organization in need of volunteers? If so, email/talk to us/fill out the form on our website to let us know! We are always looking for new events and ideas, plus, helping to plan an event is a great way to prepare yourself if you want to hold a future leadership role.
