Award Purpose Overall Purpose: • Support outstanding clinical investigators whose participation and activities promote a culture of successful clinical research. • Mid-level clinical investigators at NCI-designated Cancer Centers • At least 3 years but no more than 10 years from initial post-fellowship instructor-level/academic appointment. • Participating in NCI-funded collaborative clinical trials • Promote the retention of clinical investigators in academic clinical research careers.

  3. Funding • Maximum $50,000 total costs per year • Two years • Allowable costs • Salary • Travel (up to $2500/year) • Registration fees for courses, seminars, conferences, workshops • Non-allowable costs • Research-related costs, including but not limited to research supplies, computers, equipment, core facility fees, or sample or data analysis • Salary for personnel other than the nominee • Secretarial or administrative assistance and supplies

  4. Nominee • Nominated by Cancer Center Director • One nominee/application/cancer center • Nominee cannot have received this award previously • Cancer Centers that received the first year of this award in fall 2012 not eligible to submit an application for 2013

  5. Eligibility • Full-time faculty member, assistant or associate professor level • Physician, oncology nurse, clinical psychologist, or similarly qualified clinician with a doctoral degree • Board certified, practicing at least 3 but no more than 10 years from initial academic appointment • Engaged in NCI-funded cancer clinical trials • Must not currently serve or have previously served  as • PI of an NIH R, K, P, U, T, DP, RC, SC or TU series grant • Exceptions: career development awards, mentored awards where the PI is required to be mentored by another investigator • Project leader/co-leader of a research project within a P01/U19 (Program Project Grant/Research Program Cooperative Agreement) • Project leader/co-leader of a research project within a P50 (SPORE) or other P series grant

  6. Narrative • Training, experience, activities • Involvement in NCI-funded cancer clinical trials and clinical trial-related activities • Plans for a career in academic clinical research

  7. Planned Activities and Projects • Outline and describe activities and projects planned under this award, including timeline • Should not propose a specific research project

  8. Letters of Support • Three signed letters of support • At least one institutional support letter should indicate the institution’s level of commitment to fostering the nominee’s career as a clinical investigator in an academic clinical research career, as reflected by the extent to which the nominee will have dedicated time for activities proposed in the application. • At least 15% effort for activities proposed in the application • Include name and institutional affiliations of the individuals who will provide letters of support in the LOI due February 22

  9. Evaluation Criteria • Training and experience • Leadership experience in clinical research activities/clinical trials • Extent and breadth of participation in clinical research activities/clinical trials

Evaluation Criteria cont. • Activities that would not be possible without the award • How award will promote/enhance a successful clinical research culture • Retention of the nominee in an academic clinical research career • Clear institutional commitment to allow at least 15% effort for activities proposed in the application

Timeline February 22, 2013 - Letter of Intent to apply for this administrative supplement due by email • Name of the Cancer Center, intent to apply, Nominee, name and institutional affiliations of individuals who will provide letters of support  March 22, 2013 - Cover Letter, Application, and Letters of Support due • Email an electronic copy of the application in PDF format, including the cover letter and letters of support Late Summer – Notifications sent CCITLA supplements must cycle with the Cancer Center parent P30 award.
