For 85 years, United Way of Central Maryland has been a partner in addressing health and human needs across the region. United Way’s Value None of us expect to suddenly be unable to provide the basics for ourselves and our loved ones. But in this economy it can happen to the best of us. United Way of Central Maryland’s safety net is there to help catch those in need.

  7. Did You Know? The Effects of the Recession are Not Over Yet: • There are more calls for help. They are more complex. Last year 96,564 people received information and referrals to help them with housing, utility assistance, food, financial assistance or income support and much more through 2-1-1 Maryland at United Way. • “Point In Time” Census of Homelessness from 2007-2009: • Anne Arundel INCREASEDby 15% • Baltimore City INCREASEDBY 12% • Carroll INCREASEDby 13% • Harford declined by 5% • Howard INCREASEDby 29%

  8. Did You Know? The Effects of the Recession are Not Over Yet: • People are losing their homes – More than 14,000 evictions took place in central Maryland. • Affordable, safe housing is hard to find–Fair market rent for a two-bedroom apartment in central Maryland is $1,037 – meaning it costs more than two minimum wage jobs! • Homelessness impacts kids– Average age of a homeless person is 9. Homeless children are less successful in school. • Child care is out of reach for many working parents– Quality child care ranks as one of the two top household expenses in across Maryland

We make the most of time, energy and dollars for the greatest good Last year, our fundraising, educational efforts and programs resulted in more than 1,600 nonprofits receiving support. This allowed them to focus on what matters most – helping people in need – without spending time or incurring the costs of raising the funds themselves.

  10. Why United Way? We make sure the work gets done right AND bring even more $$ back to central Maryland Local, respected experts help us understand what works. That’s how we ensure your gift goes to where it gets real results. United Way doesn’t stop there – we rallied more than 3,000 volunteers who gave 97,597 volunteer hours of service – that’s $2,034,897 infused into the local economy. We also managed a $9.5 million federal grant to help people get and/or stay in affordable housing and helped bring in part of the statewide $17 million returned to individuals and families through free income tax preparation. That means more money for low-income people who are suffering most from the recession.

We also hold the “Standards For Excellence” certification from MANO. We respect your right to make your own choice. We gladly share information to help you make an informed choice, but it is YOUR choice. You can choose “United Way of Central Maryland” and give to urgent basic needs like food, shelter and access to healthcare or give through us to any health & human service organization in the U.S.

You’re the Key! • Role of Coordinator / Ambassador / Team Captain • Assist with e-pledging • Provide paper pledge forms as needed • Educate about United Way • Become familiar with UW resources • Distribute UW materials upon request • Refer potential donors to UW websites • Ask • Answer Questions • Reinforce the Message

  17. Your Keys to Success Donating to a charity is an individual and personal decision. Your job is simply to provide the opportunity to give. Remember, the main reason people give to the United Way is that they were asked. • Get your employees charged up. Advertise and promote your department’s campaign. Display posters, signs and other UW literature. Email a United Way Community Fact of the day. • Make it educational. People want to know where their money is going and how it is helping. Conduct meetings with UWCM representation and show the campaign video • Make it fun! • Make it personal. Make sure everyone in your department has been asked personally. Remember, people give to people. • Report results and say thank you. Hold thank you luncheons or send thank you cards or emails. • For additional tips visit www.uwcm.org

  19. Your Keys to Success 10 Ways to Increase Your Department Giving • 6. Form a conga line with enthusiastic team members to travel the halls of your area and create excitement and awareness about the campaign. • 7. Send daily reminders with “Did you know” stats about United Way and how the investment they are making is improving the community. For a list of “Did you know” stats, email Jeff.Pratt@uwcm.org • 8. Get your department leadership involved in the campaign. Make sure their voice is heard as an advocate of giving to United Way. • 9. Gather a team of diverse enthusiastic team members to survey what they think will work as a motivator in your department and then ask for their help in executing the ideas. • 10. Ask, ask, ask. Make sure everyone in your department has personally been asked to give to United Way of Central Maryland. The number #1 reason people do not give is because they haven’t been asked • . Whatever you can give, GIVES HOPE • Host an employee meeting, invite a UWCM speaker, and educate employees about the ROI on their investment with United Way. To request a UWCM speaker, email Jeff.Pratt@uwcm.org • Gather employees for a Day of Action – a group volunteer project with a United Way of Central Maryland agency. To organize a Day of Action, email Jeff.Pratt@uwcm.org • Email or show in a group setting, the JH UWCM vignettes that can be found at www.hopkinsmedicine.org/unitedway • Host a leadership event or investor luncheon as an opportunity to have a meaningful dialog with UW staff about the work we are doing in education, income or health.   20. JHM UWCM 2010 Campaign Speaking Points Opening Talk about why you personally support UWCM. The current economic conditions have brought significant challenges to our community. Despite these difficulties, we recognize that no matter how bad things may seem for us, that times are even more difficult others. Promote Johns Hopkins Medicine support for United Way: Johns Hopkins is the largest supporter in employee dollars to United Way of Central Maryland. We are a leader in the community and our support is needed now more than ever. Why UWCM? Because no one agency or organization or government entity can solve our communities problems; but, with United Way, we are supporting thousands of health and human service charities and more than100 core agencies, all working in collaboration to tackle our communities most pressing issues. United Way of Central Maryland is our partner of choice United Way is focusing on the issues that matter most to us and to our community by striving for change in education, income and health. A stronger community means a better life for everyone. 2-1-1 Maryland at United Way connects people seeking assistance with free, confidential information and referrals 24/7. Nearly 100,000 calls for help were received last year. United Way of Central Maryland is funding programs that work. Programs that: • Get people out of crisis • Keep people out of crisis • Help people achieve a better quality of life And UWCM holds itself and the agencies doing this great work accountable for achieving targeted outcomes. With United Way, donors can give to United Way, to the Johns Hopkins Neighborhood Fund, or donors can direct their contribution to any nonprofit health or human service agency in the country. Starting in 2009, United Way of Central Maryland introduced a low 5% designation fee ($5 minimum, $500 maximum). The ASK / The Close Please consider making a pledge today. Give help for today and hope for tomorrow. Give. Advocate. Volunteer.

Key Info – New Cash/Check and Event Procedures • Personal Cash or Check Pledges and Donations: • Any and all personal cash/check donations submitted to Operations Integration (OI) for processing must be attached to an individual completed pledge form. • Receipts will not be given for personal cash/check donations. Donors are advised to make a copy of their pledge forms, or wait for the United Way pledge acknowledgement (if they chose to receive one). • Cash and checks will be kept in the OI lock box, in a locked closet. • A United Way representative will collect the cash /checks from OI. • The United Way representative and an OI staff member will count the cash. • The United Way representative will give the OI staff member a receipt to be placed in the cash box. • Event donations: • All event based donations will be processed by Carol Woodward, not OI. • Carol Woodward will issue a receipt for event donations.
