  1. The Pros and Cons of Living On and Off Campus

  2. Planning your move to university is an exciting time, but it also comes with important decisions. One thing you’ll need to decide is where you want to live. There are two main options for McMaster accommodation: you can live on campus or you can look for student rooms for rent. Both have their share of pros and cons.

  3. On-Campus Living: Pros You’ll Save Time You’ll avoid wasted time travelling to and from school, grocery shopping, cooking meals, and cleaning an entire apartment. There Will Be Plenty Happening If you want to get involved in activities like clubs, sports, student organizations, and volunteering opportunities, living on campus is ideal. You’ll be right in the centre of everything.

  4. On-Campus Living: Cons You Don’t Choose Your Roommates You’ll have no choice as to who you live with or near, including who shares your bathroom. There Will Be More Distractions It’s great to live around other students when you want to socialize, but it’s problematic when you want to study. You may find it difficult to concentrate due to noise and distractions.

  5. Off-Campus Living: Pros It’s Cheaper When you add all the costs of living off campus together (rent, utilities, and groceries), it still comes to less than living on campus. You may even save $5,000 or more for the eight-month school year, provided that you budget appropriately.

  6. You’ll Have More Freedom There are fewer rules when you live off campus, including about who you can invite over.

  7. Off-Campus Living: Cons You’ll Need to Sign a Lease Some student housing requires you to sign a 12-month lease, even if you’re going home over the summer. This is especially true for apartments near campus.

  8. You’ll Need to Figure Out Transportation You may be able to save more money if you live at a distance from campus, but then you’ll need to figure out transportation. If it’s too far to walk, you’ll need to look into using public transport or purchasing a car.

  9. You’ll Need to Pay Bills You’ll need to pay bills for utilities like Internet, water, and electricity. There’s one way to receive all the pros of both options but none of the cons: an all-inclusive suite near campus. West Village Suites are just minutes away from McMaster University and designed just for students.

  10. You’ll have a bedroom in an apartment with roommates chosen according to your personality. Plus, the suites have everything you need to live a comfortable student lifestyle.
