  2. M-learning with tablets: Enriching Primary Literacy

M-Learning for literacy in a primary context “Can enhance and enrich the concept and activity of learning, with learning experiences that are more personalised, authentic, situated and context-aware than ever before...Increases motivation, especially those considered distant, disengaged or disenfranchised”(Traxler, 2010) • Hutchison(2012) Research: 3wk period with aim to simultaneously teach print-based and digital literacy goals • Digital interactive books and Apps - new literacies • Lankshear & Knoel (2003, cited in Hutchison, 2012) different affordances of e-books "To become fully literate in today's world, students must become proficient in the new literacies of 21st Century technology“ International Reading Association

Benefits of Tablets versus Other Technology The specifications of a tablet that make it appropriate for classroom teaching and learning : • light-weight compared to a laptop • easy to hold and work on size compared to a cell phone • 10hr battery life exceeds other handheld tech • touch screen operation • Limited multi-task operation • motion sensor • can use wireless keyboard • No disruptive texting/calling (Madan, 2011)

Limitations and Weaknesses Debunked As with all developing classroom tools, there are issues that include, but are not limited to; • wireless network access, speed and reliability • physical environment issues such as personal security (Park, 2011) • 'disruptive' communication aspects (although considerably less than a cell phone with text capability) • Kukulska-Hulme (2007, cited in Park, 2011) identification of physical attributes such as small screen size, heavy weight and short battery life are no longer relevant

Activity One • ReadExploring the use of iPad for literacy learning (Hutchison, 2012) Note comments on curricula integration over technology integration, and the discussion that apps provided room for creativity in not confining students to set boxes to fill that would normally be provided on paper. • Discuss whether you think this research illustrates enrichment of a literacy program through m-learning, and comment on any changes you would make

  8. Activity Two • Watch this YouTube video on iPads in Literacy • Discuss "Are teacher's implementing tablets to enrich the classroom, or are they limited in creativity to things that could be done otherwise?
