  1. Things To Remember When It Comes To Habitat Management For Deer These days hunters are looking for more than simply a good hunt, they are now looking at the deer habitat more closely to provide them with a realistic hunting experience that is fun and enjoyable, as well as safe. For hunting clubs, lodges and hunting spaces it is imperative that you take your habitat management for deer very seriously to provide the deer with the best living environment, while providing hunters with a complete hunting experience to enjoy. So where do you start? It is not an easy task and often hunting establishments choose the expertise of hunting management professionals to conduct research, gathering the information through numerous surveys to provide establishments with the strategy that they need to rely on the best habitat management for deer solutions that they can rely on and trust. The first and most important thing to always remember and to ensure every hunter that comes to your establishment follows, is to never harvest the young bucks. Young bucks are easily identifiable and therefore hunters should have no excuse. Your young bucks are what are going to help you product new deer and create sustainable flocks to ensure your hunters always have a great hunt when visiting you. The next thing is to identify exactly how many deer your land can handle comfortably, while providing them with a natural habitat. Take into account the number of harvests taking place each year along with the number of does that you have.

  2. You must focus on controlling your doe numbers at all times. Too many females and you could end up with a serious overpopulation on your land. During certain times of the year, you can give your hunters permission to hunt the does, so that you can manage your habitat for your deer more effectively. From here you need to create sanctuaries for your deer. It's not uncommon for deer to feel the hunting pressure, especially if they don't have a safe refuge area where they can go to. Deer that feel hunted will eventually become nocturnal, which is something you want to avoid because the majority of your clients are going to want to go out hunting during the day. Your sanctuary can be hedges and shrubs in a certain area, maybe with some tree cover, where the deer can go to feel comfortable and safe. Remember to always have at least one large pond for the deer to drink. This should not become the target for your hunters, but a place to ensure your herd feels comfortable, while providing hunters with a good herd count for their hunting enjoyment. Set up food plots where the deer can go and forage with ease. This should make up a good percentage, maybe between three and five percent of your land size. Food plots can provide the deer with the forage that they need and a common place for them to go and eat. Ensure that you reduce the hunting pressure on the deer. As mentioned before, deer can become nocturnal, which is what you want to avoid. Only allow a certain number of hunters to hunt at the same time. Deer can feel the pressure of hunt season and they will become more wary to show themselves. Always provide ample cover. Trees are the best option to be placed throughout the area to create a realistic living environment, but also provide hunters with a place that feels real. The final step is to ensure you keep accurate records and monitor your habitat for deer at all times to ensure your management plan is effective moving forward.
