  1. The Importance Of Finding The Best Hunting Destination Every wing-shooter, every deer hunter understands – or should understand – that finding the best hunting destination is at the heart of the success of their hunt, at the heart of the pleasure they derive from following and supporting their pastime or, as it is for many, their passion. It does not matter whether you are a big game hunter, or someone that favors shooting at birds in flight, or whether you hunt whitetail deer in Alabama and surrounds: if you enjoy the hunt then you want to visit a region, a lodge, a piece of land where you are given the best opportunity at bagging that prey and for the thrill of leaving with a trophy or simply great memories. Of course there are different destinations for the hunter in the US and elsewhere to enjoy a trip either on their own, or with a buddy, or as member of a group. Just: some destinations are better than others, and it boils down, most of the time, to the quality of the prey one is offered. This, in turn, is influenced by how exactly, and on what land, the animals are raised. Hunting has come a long way from the early years when it simply depended on a hit and miss situation. These days hunting in first world countries such as the US, for example, are multi-million industries that attract not only money but also the support of hunters that are happy to pay – but then they want to know they are offered superior opportunities. Therefore land owners that want to compete with others in their districts and states know that they have to offer hunters great prey, which can only be achieved with good management. Managing your hunting land takes great knowledge of relevant processes and systems that will indeed ensure you have the best chance at raising quality animals for your hunters. You want hunters to be satisfied with the opportunities you offer them as you want them to return to your land or lodge in the future: this happens only when you have plans in place that support raising great animal populations where they are culled responsibly, where they have access to enough water and good food sources, and where the owner knows that this can be done year after year after year.

  2. Not every land owner has the knowledge and experience, or the time, to put in place all of those practices that will ensure their deer and other animals are examples of great prey and that they are therefore preferred over other land owners’. It is safe to say that controlled hunting practices, the best management plans in terms of which habitat and animal populations are placed in harmony are those that ensure great hunting and create the opportunities for owners to make sure their hunters return every year. Therefore a good manager is essential to make sure everything is done correctly in order for land owners to offer their hunters the best. Such managers are not found everywhere; they are often experienced professionals with the appropriate management skills that look at all of those aspects that support initiatives to raise healthy buck and doe for the hunt – also to curb senseless culling, which forms part of responsible practice. Good managers understand the region where their services are employed, they understand what systems to put in place to monitor the animals, their movements, their access to forage and water. They use modern methodology and tools that include the gathering of data, placement of cameras to collect such data, keeping track of numbers, of sex ratio and how habitat influences the animals’ movement and physical condition. Once these systems are in place, the land or lodge owner is in a great position to offer hunters a lease to visit them, to down their trophy – and to return another time for an equally great experience.
