  1. Controlling The Deer Population On Your Land It can be exciting when your land is a natural habitat for wildlife including deer. However, you also have a responsibility to take care of the area and offer them a good place to reside. On the flip side, if there is too much for them they will overpopulate and that can lead to starvation. This is why engaging in habitat management for deer is encouraged. What does it Entail? This is a proven method approved by the Division of Wildlife. When deer struggle with overpopulation, it can be a difficult scenario. Starvation takes time, and it is a cruel means to an end. The animals are vulnerable to diseases with heavy populations and they can deplete the vegetation in that habitat. As a result, nothing can regrow there and the land suffers. With habitat management for deer efforts in place, such outcomes don’t have to happen. Instead, this process entails a detailed plan of action that assists with keeping the population balanced. A survey of the land is conducted to determine the current population, where they reside, and their daily habits as well as daily movements.

  2. Taking Care of Issues Once that initial assessment is conducted for the area, habitat management for deer efforts can be put into motion. If there are any critical issues, those have to be addressed first as they put the future for the entire population at risk. If there are signs of the deer being sick with disease, finding the source and eliminating it is essential. Sometimes, sick animals can be treated. Once the critical issues have been taken care of, a plan of action can be put in place that will help be balancing it now and in the future. There are many details of any habitat management for deer in order for it to be successful. Sometimes, a decision is made based on the pros and cons being evaluated and that is the best outcome overall. Approved Hunting If you have an abundance of deer, it may be a good idea to get your land used for approved hunting. With this portion of the habitat management for deer, a certain number of tags can be issued for your land. They will be specific too depending on the ratio of bucks and does you have. You can charge the hunters for the use of your land or allow them to do so for free. They will have to apply for a hunting tag for your area and be approved for it. They must keep that tag with them at all times. With this type of habitat management for deer, it can help offer a humane way to lower the population when it gets too high. Increase Population Perhaps your land has a different type of problem, you don’t have enough of a population for it become self sustainable. There are efforts you can take in order to encourage more of them to move into that open habitat. Certain types of food sources can be used to lure them in. After that, they may stay because they are going to like an area that offers both food and shelter. You do need them to be able to use the vegetation on that land for their ongoing food source though. If you have think areas, consider fertilizing and adding nutrients to the soil so the vegetation can grow better than before. Think about how the deer will access your land. You may need to offer some pathways by reducing the number of barriers. Opening up a section of land of about 5 acres could make a huge difference in their movement. They need to feel comfortable and safe there and they also need to feel their ongoing needs for food and shelter can be met by your habitat offered. About Us: https://westerveltwildlife.com.
