  1. WHY GOD BECAME MANHebrews 2:5-18 9 December 2012

  2. Nahmanides’ disputation “The doctrine in which you believe, and which is the foundation of your faith, cannot be accepted by the reason, and nature affords no ground for it, nor have the prophets ever expressed it. Nor can even the miraculous stretch as far as this… The mind of a Jew, or any other person, cannot tolerate this; and you speak your words entirely in vain, for this is the root of our controversy.”

  3. Sura4:171 “O People of the Book! Commit no excesses in your religion: nor say of God aught but the truth. Christ Jesus the son of Mary was (no more than) an apostle of God, and His Word, which He bestowed on Mary and a Spirit proceeding from Him: so believe in God and His apostles. Say not ‘Trinity’: desist: It will be better for you. For God is only one God: Glory be to Him: (Far Exalted is He) above having a son.”

  4. Hebrews 1:3 3 The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.

  5. Hebrews 2:5-8 5 It is not to angels that he has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking. 6 But there is a place where someone has testified: “What is man that you are mindful of him,    the son of man that you care for him?7 You made him a little lower than the angels;    you crowned him with glory and honour8     and put everything under his feet.”

  6. Psalm 8:1-4 1O Lord, our Lord,    how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens.2 From the lips of children and infants    you have ordained praisebecause of your enemies,    to silence the foe and the avenger. 3 When I consider your heavens,    the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars,    which you have set in place,4 what is man that you are mindful of him,    the son of man that you care for him?

  7. Psalm 8:5-95 You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings    and crowned him with glory and honour. 6 You made him ruler over the works of your hands;    you put everything under his feet:7 all flocks and herds,    and the beasts of the field,8 the birds of the air,    and the fish of the sea,    all that swim the paths of the seas. 9 O Lord, our Lord,    how majestic is your name in all the earth!

  8. Genesis 1:26 26Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

  9. Hebrews 2:8-9 In putting everything under him, God left nothing that is not subject to him. Yet at present we do not see everything subject to him. 9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honour because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

  10. 2:5-9Jesus came as our Substitute to taste death for us

  11. 2 Corinthians 5:21 21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

  12. 5:10-15Jesus came as our Trailblazer to free us from death

  13. Hebrews 2:10-13 10 In bringing many sons to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the author of their salvation perfect through suffering. 11 Both the one who makes men holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers. 12 He says, “I will declare your name to my brothers;    in the presence of the congregation I will sing your praises.” 13 And again, “I will put my trust in him.” And again he says, “Here am I, and the children God has given me.”

  15. Athanasius: “That which he has not assumed, he has not healed.”

  17. Hebrews 2:14-15 14 Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— 15 and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.

  18. “There was a real railway accident,” said Aslan softly. “Your father and mother and all of you are - as you used to call it in the Shadowlands - dead. The term is over: the holidays have begun. The dream is ended: this is the morning.” And as He spoke He no longer looked to them like a lion; but the things that began to happen after that were so great and beautiful that I cannot write them. And for us this is the end of all the stories, and we can most truly say that they all lived happily ever after. But for them it was only the beginning of the real story. All their life in this world and all their adventures in Narnia had only been the cover and the title page: now at last they were beginning Chapter One of the Great Story which no one on earth has read: which goes on forever: in which every chapter is better than the one before.

  19. 5:16-18Jesus came as our High Priest to stand before God on our behalf

  20. Hebrews 2:16-18 16 For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham’s descendants. 17 For this reason he had to be made like his brothers in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people. 18 Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

  21. Hebrews 9:28 28 so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.

  22. Hebrews 7:25 25 Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.

  24. Hebrews 4:15 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet was without sin.

  25. Practical implications

  26. Know that Christ’s incarnation is central to the gospel

  27. Know that Christ’s incarnation is central to the gospel Torrance: The whole gospel rests upon the fact that it is God who became incarnate, and it was God who in Christ has reconciled the world to himself. If the Son was to redeem the whole nature of man, he had to assume the whole nature of man; if in the Son man is to be gathered into the fellowship and life of God, it must be by one who is truly and completely God.

  28. Know that Christ’s incarnation is central to the gospel • Know that the incarnation is not an example for us to imitate

  29. Know that Christ’s incarnation is central to the gospel • Know that the incarnation is not an example for us to imitate • Trust in Jesus and you will be saved

  30. Know that Christ’s incarnation is central to the gospel • Know that the incarnation is not an example for us to imitate • Trust in Jesus and you will be saved • Trust in Jesus who helps us in our troubles and weakness

  31. Hebrews 4:15-16 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet was without sin. 16 Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
