  4. Rome Spreads its Power • Roman power grew slowly as the Legions fought for control of the Italian Peninsula. • Rome treated those they conquered differently. The neighboring Latin's on the Tiber River became full citizens of Rome. • Farther away people had all the rights of citizens except for the right to vote. • All others fell into a third category, called allies.

  5. The Commercial Network • With such easy access to the Mediterranean Roman merchants moved goods by land and by sea. • They traded Roman wine and Olive oil for things from other lands such as a variety of food, raw materials and manufactured goods. • At the time of the Republic however another city interfered with Roman access to the Mediterranean. • The most dominant city on the Mediterranean was Carthage.

  6. The Punic Wars • Who fights in the Punic Wars? • Rome and Carthage • What was the end result of the Punic Wars? • Rome becomes a dominant imperial power and gains control of the Mediterranean Sea • How many were there? • Three • When were they? • ~250-150 BC

  7. The First Punic War • Carthage overextends itself into Sicily. • Rome Gets angry • Rome wins and gains control of Sicily and forces Carthage to limit colonies

  8. The Second Punic War • Carthage occupies Spain and other Mediterranean areas. • Hannibal takes the Carthaginian army through Spain over the Alps and into Italy, occupying it for over 10 years. • Rome decides to weaken Carthage by attacking Spain and then Carthage. • This forces Hannibal to retreat. Rome wins again

  9. The Third Punic War • Rome is still salty at Carthage so… • Rome burns Carthage to the ground, sells their inhabitants into slavery and plows salt into their fields so crops could not grow!

  10. Closing? • Why did war erupt between Rome and Carthage? • Why did Hannibal march his army through the Alps? • What was the end result of the Punic Wars?
