  9. Generator Diagram Figure from: http://iopscience.iop.org/0964-1726/13/5/018/pdf/0964-1726_13_5_018.pdf ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  10. Major Especifications • Efective energy density • Size • Design • Circuit Model • Resons for Design ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  11. Efective Energy Density Diagram from: http://iopscience.iop.org/0964-1726/13/5/018/pdf/0964-1726_13_5_018.pdf ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  12. Energy Density Parameters • σy is the yield stress • k is the coupling coefficient • c is the elastic constant • B is the magnetic field • μ0 is the permeability of free space • ε0 is the permittivity of free space • and E is the electric field ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  13. Testing Results of a Prototype Graph from: http://iopscience.iop.org/0964-1726/13/5/018/pdf/0964-1726_13_5_018.pdf ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  14. Testing Results Graph from: http://iopscience.iop.org/0964-1726/13/5/018/pdf/0964-1726_13_5_018.pdf ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  15. Size • Size constraints play an important role in selecting a power converter configuration. For this reason it is necessary to specify the general size at the outset. While the model developed holds for any size, if a generator an order of magnitude larger or smaller were desired, a different design configuration may be preferred. ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  16. Design • A two-layer bender mounted as a cantilever • S is strain • V is voltage • M is mass • z is vertical displacement. Figure from: http://iopscience.iop.org/0964-1726/13/5/018/pdf/0964-1726_13_5_018.pdf ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  17. Circuit Model Figure from: http://iopscience.iop.org/0964-1726/13/5/018/pdf/0964-1726_13_5_018.pdf ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  18. Reasons for Design • First, for a given force input, the cantilever configuration results in the highest average strain, and the power output is closely related to the average strain developed in the bender. • Second, the cantilever mounting results in the lowest resonance frequency for a given size, which is important because the target input vibrations are low frequency (60–200 Hz). ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  19. Limitations • The piezoelectric vibration sensor is limited to use where mechanical energy (vibration) is abalible. • In some applications, such as wireless, the sensors are limited to sizes due to constant demand of reduction in size by industry.
