Science Class Connect Rules • Respect the classroom and our privileges • Do not pollute the chat box • Stay on topic • Science class connects are not free chat sessions • Respect the teacher and your peers • Be appropriate and use good language • Be kind to others • Class connects are a time to learn • Have fun! • Science is cool and full of lots of fun lessons and labs! If you are unable to follow these three rules your privileges will be taken away!

  2. Unit 9 Lesson 16: Manned Space Exploration • Agenda: • Describe types of manned space exploration technology. • Describe the purpose and results of the Apollo space missions. • Describe how space travel affects the human body.

  4. John F. Kennedy • President of the United States • In 1962, he set a goal that US would put a man on the moon by the end of the 1960’s FYI: Soviet Union sent the 1st humans into space in 1961 Yuri Gagarin (27 yrs old)

  5. Important Space U.S. Missions • Project Mercury • Project Gemini • Project Apollo

Project Mercury • Started in 1958 • Goals of project: • Orbit a crewed spacecraft around Earth and bring the spacecraft safely back to Earth • Look at how space effects humans • May 5, 1961: Alan B. Shepherd became 1st American in space • Trip lasted 15 minutes • February 20, 1962: John Glenn became 1st American to orbit Earth

  7. 1st Woman in Space!!! On June 16, 1963: Valentina Tereshkova became the 1st woman in space. She made 48 orbits around Earth and spent 3 days in space.

Project Gemini • 1962 • Goals of project: • Send a 2-person spacecraft into space for 2 weeks • Meet and dock with another spacecraft in space • Land returning spacecraft on land, not water • June 1965: Edward H. White II became 1st American to complete a space walk • Project Gemini did not reach the 3rd goal

Project Apollo • 1963 • Goal of project: • Land on and explore the moon • Of the 10 missions, only 6 landed on the moon • Apollo 11: 1st astronauts to walk on moon • Neil Armstrong • Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin • Michael Collins: stayed in orbit within spacecraft • Met JFK’s promise of Americans on the moon in late 1960’s (1969)

  10. Apollo Missions: • Apollo 1 • Command module caught fire before launch • Apollo 7 • Mission was to command/service module; not land on moon. Success!! • Apollo 8 • Mission to test crew function; not land on moon. Success!! • Apollo 9 • Mission to test function of 1st crewed lunar module. Success!! • Apollo 10 • Mission to test lunar landing (but not to actually land). Success!! • Apollo 11 • Mission to land on moon! Success!!! • Apollo 12 • Mission to land on moon and explore. Success!! • Apollo 13 • Mission to land and explore. Engine failure while in space. Returned to Earth minus 1 astronaut • Apollo 14 • Mission to explore certain area of moon. Success!! • Apollo 15 • Mission to explore, do experiments, test equipment, take pictures. Success!! • Apollo 16 • Mission similar to 15’s, but added on extra tests with lunar orbit. Success! • Apollo 17 • Mission: more research. Also a scientist was on board! Success!

Other noteworthy missions: • 1962: 1st American to orbit Earth three times • John Glenn orbited Earth 3 times while aboard Friendship 7 • 1973: Skylab • America’s 1st space station • 1986: Challenger • Space shuttle explode 73 seconds after launch. All the crew died. • 1998: International Space Station • United States, Canada, Japan, Russia, European Space Agency, and Brazil • Currently doing experiments of how space effects human body and plants
