  2. Leaders & Settlement Throughout Colonial America, and the countries that made contact with it, there have been many leaders. Here are a select few of important and/or unsuccessful leaders involved with the settlement of Colonial America and much more…

  3. George Washington 1732-1799 This leader was quite important to the settlements of America. Being the first president he led all of the colonies and helped the settlements by leading formed militias out of each one (as a general). He also allowed the American people to make settlements west of the Appalachian Mts. Therefore expanding the number of settlements.

  4. Benjamin Franklin1706-1790 Benjamin Franklin was also an important leader involving the settlements. He not only helped guide all of the colonies to freedom, but helped individual settlements as well. He invented various creations through science. He really helped out settlements by founding a hospital, fire department, and a lending library, all of which greatly helped settlers and are still frequently used today.

  5. John Smith1580-1631 Captain John Smith was a very important leader for the infamous colony of Jamestown. This adventurer and soldier had had many adventures before his journey to America, including fighting many different places, such as the Turks and Spanish, and rising quickly to the rank of captain. This man was famous because he greatly helped the Jamestown settlement by stating that if you did not work you wouldn’t eat.

  6. John White1550-1593 Although not as well known as other leaders involved in settlements, this man brought up one somewhat unsuccessful yet mentionable settlement. Although Sir Walter Raleigh was the one who sent people to his settlement, his first try at Roanoke island failed. However he tried again, sending 117 people led by John White to create Roanoke Island, a new settlement. When the settlement was in dire need of supplies, John White traveled to England and expected to return to Roanoke in as little as a few months, but returned three years later because of the war with the Spanish. When he returned, Roanoke was gone, the word Croatoan was carved into wood, inferring that the colonists may’ve gone to another nearby island, however, investigations were ceased because of bad weather.

  7. William Bradford1590-1657 This man was the leader of a group of pilgrims and several other people traveling to America on the Mayflower, some (the pilgrims) coming to America for a religious purpose, and some (the others) were just common folk, going to America for their own reasons. William Bradford helped establish a small settlement on Cape Cod. The settlement obeyed English laws through the Mayflower Compact and later had help from the Native Americans. Almost half of the pilgrims died in the first winter of the settlement in America. The settlement lived quite happily with the Native Americans after a Pawtuxet called Squanto who could speak English and Samoset, another Native American, helped the pilgrims. The settlement was therefore quite successful.

  8. Conclusion In conclusion each of these men played a role in the making of America and its settlements. Without the efforts of these leaders and diplomats, we may not have what we call the U.S.A. Without these various people, our society would not be as e know it today, for better or for worse. Overall I think that these settlers and folk of older times had a lot in mind. Of course most if not all of these leaders would be quite successful in today’s government affairs. This last slide concludes my report of a younger America.
