  3. CEOS Background • Established in 1984 • Recommendation From a Panel of Experts on R/S • Auspices of Economic Summit of Industrialized Nations • Working Group on Growth, Technology, & Employment • Recognized Cross-Disciplinary Influence • Need to Coordinate Satellite Missions • Outgrowth of Two Organizations • Coordination on Ocean Remote Sensing Satellites • Coordination on Land Observation Satellites

  4. CEOS Background • Optimize the benefits of spaceborne Earth observations through cooperation in mission planning and development of compatible data products, formats, services, applications & policies; • To serve as a focal point for international coordination of space-related Earth observation activities; • To exchange policy and technical information to encourage complementarity and compatibility among spaceborne Earth observation systems and the data received from them.

  7. WGISS Background WGISS aims to assist CEOS participating members and associates, as data and information providers supporting users worldwide towards easy access and application of Earth observation data and information. Thus, WGISS aims to address the needs of data providers by improving the efficiency of operation and maximizing the utilization and benefit of the EO data that they gather. WGISS will also address the needs of data and information users by providing simpler and wider access to the resources they require.

  8. WGISS Background The scope of WGISS is to provide a framework for addressing the long-term needs of both data and service providers to better serve the users. As such, WGISS addresses all activities related to the capture, description, processing, access, retrieval, utilization, maintenance, archiving and exchange of space borne Earth Observation data and supporting ancillary data and information, enabling improved interoperability and interconnectivity of Earth observation information systems and services, combining space borne EO data with in-situ data.
