  1. The South Secedes, January 1861 Abraham Lincoln has just been elected president, also an abolitionists, and he is already faced with a problem, south Carolina succeeding and along with that six other southern states, succeed and then four more. These southern states are now known as the CSA or Confederate States of America.

  2. The South Creates a Government, February 1861 South Carolina has succeeded along with the six other states so they decide to create a government with a provisional president, Jefferson Davis.

  3. The South Seizes Federal Forts, February 1861 Some federal forts were to tried to be seized and the forts didn’t surrender so the Confederates seized forts like Fort Sumter.

  4. Lincoln’s Inauguration, March 1861 Lincoln said that he had no intentions of ending slavery but he did say that succession was unacceptable. He wanted to solve this crisis without warfare.

  5. Attack on Fort Sumter, April 1861 On April 1861 fort Sumter was attacked by the confederates, Lincoln was only planning to send food and the confederate’s commander thought it was a trick so they seized the fort. When the Confederates shot at the fort, they have just started war.

  6. Four More States Join The Confederacy, April 1861 The attack on Fort Sumter made even more states join the confederacy, and with Virginia in the confederacy Richmond became the confederacy’s capital.

  7. West Virginia is Born, June 1861 Some counties in Virginia didn’t agree with succeeding so west Virginia joined the Union.

  8. Four Slave States Stay in the Union, June 1861 Even though Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, and Missouri were slave states they didn’t join the confederacy because of the Union’s military pressure.

  9. First Battle of Bull Run, July 1861 This is where the Union attacked the confederates and were winning, but the confederates won with the help of one of the most brilliant generals at that time stonewall Jackson, also with help of reinforcements.

  10. General McDowell Is Replaced, July 1861 The Army of the Union need high-level training and general McDowell couldn’t give that so Lincoln replaced McDowell with McClellan.

  11. Blockade of the South, July 1861 The Union tried to blockade the south with naval ships, and by July they had made their plan better, but the South fought back by creating smaller faster ships that were easy to maneuver.
