  7. ACCREDITATION • Western Association of Colleges and Universities. • Approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing.

APPLICATION PROCESS • Application Fee: • $20-online application • Application Form • Personal statement • Two references (academic and professional) • Official college transcripts (from every college attended) • 2.5 minimum overall GPA • 2.5 minimum science GPA • Proof of completion of Chemistry, General Psychology, and English 1 • High school transcripts (only needed if you have less than 15 transferrable, college units)

  9. Application Form • List any alternate names (i.e. maiden name or nickname that may appear on the supporting documents) • List all courses you plan on taking before starting with us • List all the colleges you have attended

Transcripts • We will need official transcripts from all the colleges that you have attended, including: • Any Community College attended • Any University/ 4-year college attended • Foreign transcripts from study-abroad program • Official Transcripts from all foreign study • Transcripts from Graduate or Professional degree • Transcripts from vocational program i.e. LVN,C.N.A, Phlebotomy, E.M.T • Transcripts for all courses completed by the deadline

We only accept online applications, however a PDF of the application is available. If you submit the application PDF, the application fee is $40.

  12. PREREQUISITE COURSES • College Chemistry (4 units), with lab • General Psychology • English 1A • Must attain a “C” or higher in all pre-requisites Prerequisites must be completed by the time you apply.

FOREIGN STUDENTS If you attended college outside the United States, we will need the following items: • Official, sealed, international transcripts • An official, detailed international evaluation of your foreign coursework The evaluation company that we recommend is Academic Credentials Evaluation Institute.   17. Applying For Financial Aid • Apply for financial aid at the same time you are applying for admission. • Fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to be processed into a Student Aid Report

  32. Evening and Weekend Program • Approved by CA Board of Registered Nursing • Targets adults who want to pursue a career in nursing • Classes are held weekdays, Monday – Thursdays • We currently have option for afternoon classes on a trial basis. • Hospital experiences are on weekends

  33. Community Nursing Experience • Pediatrics, Obstetrics, Gerontology • Exposure to elements of community health nursing • Need to schedule experience during working hours, Monday-Friday • Shelters, LA unified school district, COACH, Senior Day Care Centers, Literacy Reading Program

  34. Successful Completion Leads To: • Receive A.A. Degree in Nursing • Eligible to take the NCLEX-RN (state board) Exam • Employment opportunities in hospitals and clinics. Additional education may be needed for community, home health, and public health areas.

BRN POLICY ON: DENIAL OF LICENSURE • For crimes or acts which are substantially related nursing qualifications, functions, or duties • Most convictions involving sex crimes, drug crimes, and crimes of violence consideredsubstantially related to nursing practice. • Examples: child abuse, sex offender, assault/battery, dangerous drugs or devices

  36. BACKGROUND CHECK • A background check is mandatory prior to clinical placement in the 2nd half of the 1st semester. • Any concerns should be addressed BEFORE beginning the program.

Details of an Evening/weekend Program: • Program is FULL-TIME and rigorous. • Must plan for • finances, • Time management • Consistent support system prior to admission. • Course load: 8 to 13 units/semester; a minimum of 6 units is needed to qualify for financial aid. • Success may require no employment or minimal hours.

ADN Curriculum Plan • Total program: 2 ½ - 3 years (5 sessions year round) • A total of 80 units are required: • 36 units general studies (GE) courses • 44 units of nursing courses • Transfer credits: may transfer 36 units of general studies courses • College Chemistry (4 units), General Psychology, and English 101 must be completed at the time of application.

  40. Is testing required for admission? • Math Test: minimum of 84% beforestarting nursing courses • If the score is below 84%, remediation required prior to retest. • May retest only once. • Proficiency tests: • English & Math administered before admission into the program. • Applicants for “Advanced Option” must complete the tests prior to starting nursing courses.

  41. Basic Option (3 years) Complete GE courses in Year 1 Start nursing courses in Year 2 May start nursing in the second semester if only few GE courses are needed. Advanced Option (2 years) Transfers in GE courses; RST 41 must be taken within the program Start with nursing courses Two options available

Class Schedule of Hours • Evening Classes: • Mon – Thurs; • 5:30 to 9:30 p.m.; • some classes are scheduled on Saturdays • Additional option- afternoon nursing classes from 12:30-4:30pm-continues on a trial basis. • Each course meets • One evening/week. • Science courses two evenings/wk. • Clinical experiences: • Saturdays and Sundays • 6:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. • Some week day for community experience. • Generally on campus 2-3 evenings/week

What is the schedule like? • Students attend two 16-week semesters and a 10-week summer session during the year. • Fall semester starts in late August and ends in December before Christmas. • Spring semester starts in January and ends in May. • Summer session starts in mid-May and ends in early August.

  44. What is the length of courses? • General Studies courses • 16 weeks in Fall and Spring • 10 weeks in the Summer • Nursing courses are offered in 8-week increments • Fall two 8-week sessions • Spring two 8-week sessions • Summer one 8-week session

  46. RANDOM DRUG TESTING • Agencies that provide clinical sites for students • Abide by policies and procedures of facilities • Facilities may require random drug testing of students • Failure to comply will result in exclusion from clinical

  47. Clinical site assignment: • Carpooling is encouraged • Students need a reliable car to get to the hospital. • Proximity from home to clinical site is always considered.

  48. Which courses transfer? • May transfer maximum of 36 units of equivalent courses, with a grade of “C” or better. • Once admitted into the program, credits cannot be transferred from outside institutions. • “In progress” courses at the time of admission are transferable. • Final transcript(s) is required. • Transfer credits are evaluated by transcript analyst in the Registrar’s Office.

Science Requirements (12 units) • College-level chemistryis prerequisite to admission • Anatomy, physiology, & microbiology must have a lab and be at least 3 units. • Combined anatomy/physiology course must be at least 6 unitsto receive credits for both courses. • Combined anatomy/physiology course of 5 units or less will receive credit for anatomy only.

  50. English Requirements (6 units) Eng 1A is a pre-requisite for admission English 1ASpeech 101 Eng 1, Eng 101 Speech 1 • Only Oral Communication or Public Speaking meets speech requirement • Eng 3, 103 may not be used
