  8. 2.Conflict Theorist 3. Symbolic Interactionist 1. Functionalist a. Media images become social problems when groups use these images to exert power over others and serve their own interests. EX: news programs in certain countries are only allowed to show positive reports about their political leaders b. If people do not know their roles, or are unable to perform roles due to media images, then social problems occur. EX: a mother who feels she should use her time and money to maintain her beauty may neglect her responsibilities to her children. c. Social definitions can change over time and the media has the power to influence definitions EX: repeated images of Latina women as uneducated housekeepers cause stereotyping. Read the statements and write down who would say each. 3 mins

  13. How is American culture viewed by others? View International Student Experience Colombia University International Business Students View Part 2

  14. Culture Total way of life shared my members of a community bound together by a common: -history -geographic location -language -economic level -religion

  15. 6 Characteristic’s of Culture • Islearned • Is taken for granted (“the last thing a fish would notice is water”) • Is symbolic (the significance of cultures lies in the meaning it holds for people) • Isconstantly changing and shaped by political, social, and economic conditions. • Effects how we perceive and evaluate the world around us

  16. Culture exists on 3 levels  Non-material culture Material culture

  17. What culture is NOTThink of a typical “multicultural day” • Artifacts or material used by a people  • Biological traits such as race • The idealized and romantic heritage of a people as seen with food, music, holidays, etc. • Higher class status derived from a knowledge of the arts, manners, literature, etc.

  18. Values: shared beliefs about what is important • General guidelines for behavior • Define what is important within society (ex: respect for elders) • Ideas of what people should give importance to • Vary from one society to another What do you we value in the United States?

  19. Values in the U.S. Sociologist Robin Williams (1965) identified the following as underlying core values shared my many in U.S. society: • Achievement and success • Individualism • Activity/Work • Efficiency and practicality • Science and technology • Material comfort • Love • Education • Freedom Do we have the same values now?

  20. Value Contradictions. Do some of these values contradict each other? How so? • Progress • Humanitarianism • Equality • Safety • Healthy Lifestyles • Concern for the Environment • Freedom • Self-fulfillment • Achievement and success • Individualism • Activity/Work • Efficiency and practicality • Science and technology • Material comfort • Love • Education • Religion Example: Material comfort and concern for the environment

  21. Ideal culture vs. Real culture Example: Do we value safety (for children)? Yes. Laws require seat belts, car seats, young children cannot sit in the front seat until they are a certain age/weight No. We don’t always value it because many school buses do not have seatbelts

  22. Ideal culture vs. Real culture 1. Pick one value. 2. What are 2 ways we do value this? 3. What are 2 ways we do not? Progress Humanitarianism Freedom Equality Love Education Safety for children Healthy lifestyles Concern for the environment

  23. Value contradictions: two different values that can contradict each other Example: material comfort can contradict concern for the environment Ideal Culture vs Real Culture: one value that a society feels is important but may not really value Example: education (free public education for K-12, but also lots of budget cuts)

I didn’t know that I wasn’t passing. But I really need to pass to stay eligible for basketball/ football/ track…etc. Can’t you round my grade up?
