  1. Offbeat approach to heat pump usage By Anastasia Agafonova, FEA

  2. Shards of History • 1748: William Cullen demonstrates artificial refrigeration. • 1834: Jacob Perkins builds a practical refrigerator with diethyl ether. • 1852: Lord Kelvin describes the theory underlying heat pump. • 1855–1857: Peter Ritter von Rittinger develops and builds the first heat pump.

  3. Carnot cycle The Carnot cycle when acting as a heat engine consists of the following steps: reversible isothermal expansion of the gas at the "hot" temperature, isentropic (reversible adiabatic) expansion of the gas, reversible isothermal compression of the gas at the "cold" temperature, isentropic compression of the gas.

  4. Construction The main parts of a heat pump are: • a condenser; • an expansion valve; • an evaporator; • a compressor.

  5. Advantages economy reliable abundant versatile ecological friendly

  6. “Poltavavodokanal” This enterprise has an offbeat approach to utilization of heat pumps: instead of using air, water or ground, as an outer source of heat, they use heat of sewage systems.

  7. They installed heat pumps in all buildings of “Poltavavodokanal”, beginning with Zaturino sewage purification facilities

  8. Test results The usage of electrical energy……….11,8 kW The output of thermal energy………..52.7kW COP=52.7/11.8=4.5 Coefficient of performance (COP) (amountofheatmovedperunitofinputworkrequired) is equal to 4.5, i.e. for every kW of electric energy transmitted into the compressor of the heat pump, 4.5 kW of thermal energy is received.
