Role of cities in the time of migration crisis • new roles of cities in the refugee reception • renewed urgency for integration policies • anti-immigrant sentiment and tensions versus spontaneous support of voluntary initiatives • vertical and horizontal cooperation in mulitstakeholder network Research grant: Institutionalization of the European Frame of Integration Policy in the metropolises of Central-Eastern Europe. Case studies: Budapest, Prague, Warsaw NCN Opus 11.

Development of local integration strategies in Polish cities as result of complex socio-economic and political processes • lack of national model of integration • demand for foreign workers on local labour market • high inflow of divers categories of migrants • increase of hate speech and violence against migrants • active role of local civil society organizations Research grant: Institutionalization of the European Frame of Integration Policy in the metropolises of Central-Eastern Europe. Case studies: Budapest, Prague, Warsaw NCN Opus 11.

Examples of Polish cities integration strategies • Gdańsk- Immigrant’s Integration Model adopted by the city council in June 2016 • Wrocław – Strategy for Multicultural Dialogue 2018-2020 • Both strategies developed in cooperation with NGOs and migrants organizations aiming at inclusion of all categories of migrants • Goals and tools similar to other European cities integration strategies Research grant: Institutionalization of the European Frame of Integration Policy in the metropolises of Central-Eastern Europe. Case studies: Budapest, Prague, Warsaw NCN Opus 11.

Conclusions • cities started to organize independently e.g. accommodation, health care and education solutions (even in the absence of a national response) • in the heated and politicized public debate cities developed • pro-active integration policies • cities provided platforms of communication for volunteers • strong mayoral leadership in migration policy making Research grant: Institutionalization of the European Frame of Integration Policy in the metropolises of Central-Eastern Europe.
