  1. D.A.PUBLIC SCHOOL (O & A LEVELS) 7TH GRADE SCIENCE FACT FILE Acids and Alkalis Ms. Ayesha Shafiq 3rd JUNE 2011

  2. Objectives • To learn how acids and alkalis can be identified and distinguished with pH scale. • Measuring the strength of acids and alkalis • Distinguish acid and alkalis with respect to their properties • To neutralize acids and alkalis

  3. Learning outcomes • Describe the pH scale • Explain the difference between strength and concentration of acids and alkalis • Identify some daily use of Alkali • Explain neutralization • Recall the properties • Use of pH meter

  4. Properties of Acids • Produces H+ ions in water • Taste sour • Corrode metals • Good Electrolyte • React with bases to form salt and water • pH is less than 7 • Turns blue litmus paper to red

  5. Properties of Alkalis • Generally produces OH- ions in water • Taste bitter, chalky • Are electrolyte • Feel soapy, slippery • React with acids to form salt and water • pH greater than 7 • Turns red litmus paper

  6. Neutralization reaction • A salt is the product of neutralization reaction • The anion comes from the acids and the cation from the base. • EXAMPLE: Hcl + NaOHNaCl+ H2O NaCl is a natural salt.

  7. Conclusion • Use in our daily life as cleaning your teeth • Curing for indigestion • Wasp sting use of vinegar • Fizzy drinks Neutralization reaction plays very important role in our daily life. There are 2 types of substances acidic and basic reacting with each other forming salt by cancelling the effect of each other.
