  2. Journal 11/28 What is your favorite word? (It doesn't have to be in English) Why is this your favorite word?

  3. English language • German, French, and Latin roots • Variety of sources means that English has more words than most languages (thick dictionary!) • 171,000 words in use (plus another 47,000 obsolete words) • Great for poets! More words to choose from!

  4. How to choose the right words When we talk about meaning, we have to look at connotation and denotation:

  5. How to choose the right words Specificity Being specific vs. vague (she took the pen vs. she snatched the pen) Tone Words can be considered humorous, serious, formal, informal, etc.

  6. How to choose the right words Work with your group to complete the front part of the handout, categorizing words that share a similar denotation with words that have similar connotations.

  7. Poetry with strong diction These models have very strong diction. How does the word choice affect our understanding of the tone and meaning of these poems? • Read the poem aloud • Determine the literal meaning of the poem • Circle the strong diction (the words that have connotative meanings important to understanding the poem) • Answer the 2nd and 3rd questions

  9. More practice with diction Consider the words that you have come up with. Choose your favorites and use those as inspiration for a poem that tells a story about this painting. • Make sure that your diction (and therefore your tone) is consistent! • Consider other elements we've discussed: sensory detail, structure, sound, and symbols

  10. Homework Continue working on your poem, making sure that you come to class on Friday with a complete story.
