  1. Validation Dedicated RAOB Status N. R. Nalli, C. D. Barnet, D. Tobin, L. Borg, E. Joseph, A. Mollner, V. Morris, D. Wolfe, M. Oyola, M. Wilson,C. Tan, X. Xiong, M. Divakarla, A. Gambacorta,T. Reale, T. King, X. Liu, S. Kizer, D. Gu, et al. CrIMSS EDR Validation Telecon 4 Dec2012

  2. ICV Coordinated Dedicated RAOB Campaign Update* *As of 3-Dec-12

  3. Rescheduled NOAA AEROSE Intensive Cal/Val Campaign(Jan–Feb 2013) • Jan-Feb 2013 • Charleston, SC to San Juan, PR • “Best Estimate” (2/overpass) soundings are a possibility • ≈120 RS92 sondes available to launch. • 1st launch would have to be terminated prior to balloon burst altitude, as was done for the TWP site during the AIRS Validation (Tobin et al. 2006). • Most likely would not be for all the overpasses, but we could target certain ones. • Is this desired?

  4. RAOB-EDR Granule Matchup Methodology • RAOB data files are being acquired (in diverse native formats) for all the dedicated RAOB sites, in collaboration with partner institutions. • RAOB launch times and satellite overpass times are organized and tabulated (XLS spreadsheet). • RAOBs are “downgraded” to 100 layer and output to common-format ASCII tables. • CrIMSS EDR matchup granules are acquired for these RAOBs. • IDPS OPS-EDRs (42/22 level) ≤ 500 km of RAOB launch • The IDPS-RAOB matchups are Quality Assured via “quick-look” diagnostic plots. • Given QA-ed IDPS granule matchups, CrIMSS offline EDRs (101 level) can then be generated using the corresponding SDR files for any arbitrary IDPS emulation. Thus far we are looking at emulations: • MX5.3 (previous) • MX6.3 (current) • MX7 (future)

  5. CrIMSS-RAOB Matchups: PMRF Site • All planned dedicated RAOBs at the PMRF site have been launched, and all granules ≤ 500 km have been acquired. • Shown in following slides are IDPS-OPS and Offline MX5.3 EDR matchup granules the RAOBs launched from PMRF • MX5.3 emulates the IDPS-OPS • Nearest FOR • n = 36

  6. CrIMSS-RAOB Sample Matchups: PMRF All the EDR matchups were “MW-only”. All but 3 matchups show the expected agreement between the IDPS-OPS and MX5.3 Offline Emulation. A sample of the matchups are included here.

  7. CrIMSS-RAOB Sample Matchups: PMRF

  8. CrIMSS-RAOB Sample Matchups: PMRF

  9. CrIMSS-RAOB Sample Matchups: PMRF Disagreement (found in 3 matchups) was determined to result from IDPS reverting to NWP when the MW-only fails.
