  1. The New Testament 14 November 2013

  2. The Gospels • Principle witness for the life and teaching of Jesus Christ • Salvation is finally accomplished through Jesus’ Passion, death, Resurrection, and Ascension. • “Passio” suffering • Covers approximately 4 B.C. to 100 A.D.

  3. Religious Sects in the Jewish Religion • Pharisees • Educated interpreters of the Torah • Saducees • Preserved the sanctity (holiness) of the Temple • Essenes • Observed a life of solitude and prayer • Herodians • Political leaders collaborating with the Roman Empire under King Herod • Zealots • Revolutionaries concerned with regaining Jewish independence

  4. …Now imagine a little boy, raised by parents who were not famous, wealthy, or considerably educated. • 90 % of Jewish people did not belong to those religious sects. Jesus ministered to all Jews, but particularly to that 90% (much like Pope Francis does today). • “I came not for the righteous, but for sinners.”

  5. The Canon of the New Testament • Gospels • Life, ministry, teaching, Passion, death, Resurrection, and Ascension of Jesus Christ. • Acts of the Apostles • Pentecost (?) • Early Christian community, under Peter and Paul • Pauline letters • Written to those early Christian communities to offer advice, encouragement, support, and community news

  6. The Canon of the New Testament (continued) • Non-Pauline letters • Similar to Saint Paul’s letters, but written by the Apostles Peter, James, John and other authors • The Book of Revelation • written by a Jewish-Christian author, John in exile • Offers encouragement for people being persecuted for Christianity and talks about the Second Coming of Christ (Parousia) • Prophecies made in this Book are coming true today.
