  1. Flood Damage Cleanup Methods for Homes

  2. When someone's home is affected by a flood, there are many types of damage that can occur. Most people don't consider the seriousness until it happens. From damaged flooring to wet furniture to awful smells, the homeowner will need to call a company specializing in disaster response. A company experienced in flood damage cleanup, repair and restoration will usually be able to help the homeowner remedy all of the problems and restore the home to its previous condition.

  3. 1. Causes: Home flooding can occur from a variety of causes. A broken hot water heater, burst pipe or leaky roof can cause extensive damage in one room or many, depending on the location. Rainstorms and tornadoes can cause leaks, and collapsed roofs from heavy snow or hurricane-force winds can create unwanted pools of water. The water soaks into flooring, ceilings, furniture and clothing. The longer it sits, the worse the damage becomes.

  4. 2. Moisture Removal: Heavy-duty water removal equipment must be used to give the property the best chance to dry out. When walls, flooring and carpets are soaked, advanced techniques must be used for drying and dehumidification. If it doesn't happen quickly, carpet can grow mold or become stained. It can also seep into areas that can't be seen. Flooring and walls will soak up the liquid and become misshapen, discolored and even collapse. They can also grow mold and harbor insects and bacteria.

  5. 3. Infection Control: Flood water is never clean. It picks up dirt, debris, insects, microbes and other unsanitary objects, especially when it comes from the outdoors. Just because the visible moisture has been removed, this doesn't mean that the risk of infection is gone. Using anti-microbial solutions and disinfectants will help to prevent mold, mildew and bacteria from growing and creating future health problems.

  6. 4. Thermal Imaging: Touching the floor or looking at the furniture does not give the homeowner a fair representation of what is damaged. Thermal imaging can be used to determine how wet the property is and how extensive the problems are. An infrared scan uses thermal detection to find water. Since water stays the same temperature longer than solid structures, it is easier to detect using thermal imaging. These images can be used to create maps of moisture and track the origin of the leak or expose any pooling that isn't visible on the surface.
