  1. Chapter 6 Review Homework Review Section 4

  2. Inflation • When the value of money drops and the costs of goods rise. • One of the key economic reasons for the weakening of the Roman Empire – gold and silver drain (to China for silk and other luxury goods).

  3. barbarian • An “uncivilized” person. • From the Roman perspective any tribe living outside the empire was a barbarian.

  4. Mercenary • A soldier who fights only for the pay/$$. Not for the cause or country. • One of the key military reasons the Empire weakened as the Roman soldiers were only loyal to whoever was paying them.

  5. Diocletian • Roman Emperor in 284 A.D. who reforms the empire by splitting it into two halves – and east and west – to make it more manageable. • This split would ultimately cause the West to fall (in 476 A.D.) and the East to become the Byzantine Empire (surviving until 1453).

  6. Constantinople • New Capital City of the Eastern Roman Empire. • Originally Byzantium, this city would thrive due to its strategic control over trade. • Constantinople would be the Capital city of the Byzantine Empire until 1453 when it is captured by the Turks and made into Istanbul – the capital of modern Turkey today!

  7. Alaric & the Goths • Gothic leader who at first fought for the Romans but was betrayed and then fought against them. • The Goths were a Germanic Tribe from Eastern Europe (The Visigoths & the Ostrogoths). • United the Gothic tribes and sacked the city of Rome in 410 A.D. • Established a new Gothic Kingdom in what is today southern France and northern Spain.

  8. Attila & the Huns • Infamous Hun leader who terrorized the Eastern and Western Roman Empires but never captured Rome or Constantinople. • The Huns were a fierce nomadic tribe from the Asian Steppes which invaded Eastern Europe looking for “greener pasture.” – They may have turned to Europe due the the Chinese Great Wall. • Atila Carved out a piece of the Roman Empire for his people that would become the country of Hungary today!

  9. 3. The Empire declined because of • Military: Instability – weak leadership, mercenaries. • Economic: Inflation, unemployment, stagnation • Social: citizen indifference (people no longer cared) • Political: Corruption

  10. 4. Diocletian succeeds in saving the empire b/c • Divided Empire was easier to rule (east & west) • Doubles the size of the military • Checked inflation (put in price controls but they only worked in the short term).

  11. 5. Why did the Germanic Tribes invade? • To flee the invading Huns! They saw potential safety in the Empire.

  12. 6. Why did the split work? • Two emperors, closer to the “fires” and so more easily address the issues. • Smaller area easier to defend • West dies but Eastern side lives on because it has better access to the best trading sites.

  13. 7. Most serious internal threats? • Citizen Indifference – when people no longer CARE they will not make the sacrifices necessary to make the empire work. • Such as paying your taxes, which should be FAIR; volunteering for service, in either public office or the military.
