  1. India

  2. Location • India’s specific location is southeast Asia. It borders Pakistan, Nepal, China, Bangladesh, and Myanmar. The topography of India is dominantly flat, but the highest point is a 900 meter high mountain, called Kanchenjunga and the lowest point would be at sea level at 0 meters. The extreme of the climate would be the Rajasthan desert. It reaches a ridiculous 45 degrees Celsius.

  3. People • The Indian society is very interesting, it has over 22 official languages but the dominant ones are Hindi and English. The languages are taught to the young by school, teachers and parents. • The education system in India is very good. Most of the economy runs around agriculture. • The average home in India would look something like a small concrete building with very limited plumbing and wiring if any.

  4. Government • The government of India is a republic. • The government highly supports music.

  5. Vocal Music • The vocal music is not singing as we think of it, because they moan or chant and don’t sing words like we do. The vocal music is used at celebrations and for working. They often turn there singing into plays or operas so they do sing and dance. • The music is written down and memorized by the people.

  6. Culture The flag has three horizontal stripes. The top one is red, the middle one is white, and the bottom stripe is green. The traditional clothing has lots of cloths and stuff like that, that they wear over their whole bodies. The traditional foods are cooked with varied spices and oils. The vegetables vary by region. The singing and dancing plays a big role in the life of the native people. It is one of the many traditions.

  7. Religion • Religion: The religions in India are Hindu, Muslim, and Christian. 80.5% of the population is Hindu, 13.4% is Muslim, 2.3% is Christian, and 1.5% of the population is other religions. • They use music in these religions when singing and meditating.

  8. Musical Instruments Four unique instruments found in India are the sitar, the sarod, the tabla, and the bansuri. The first two of those are chordophones, the tabla is an assortment of hand drums and the last is an aero phone. The instruments are made from wood, fruit and vegetables, stringing, and metal. These instruments were made in the early 1400’s.

Sitar • A stringed instrument of India made of seasoned gourds and teak and having a track of 20 movable frets with 6 or 7 metal playing strings above and usually 13 strings below. • A long-necked stringed instrument of northern India, the dominant instrument in Hindustani music. It is used in ensembles and as a solo instrument. • The sitar was popularized in the West in the 1960s by the Indian virtuoso Ravi Shankar and is sometimes used in rock music.

  10. Sarod • A many-stringed lute of northern India. • The sarod or sarode is an Indian classical musical instrument. It is similar to the Western lute in structure. In terms of fame and popularity amongst specialists of Hindustani classical music, it occupies a position second only to that of the sitar.

  11. Tabla The tabla is a popular Indian percussion instrument used in the classical, popular and religious music of the Indian subcontinent and in Hindustani classical music. The instrument consists of a pair of hand drums of contrasting sizes and timbres.

  12. Bansuri • The bansuri is a transverse alto flute of India and Pakistan, made of a single length of bamboo with six or seven open finger holes. The North Indian bansuri, typically about 14 inches long, was traditionally used as a soprano instrument primarily for accompaniment in lighter compositions including film music.
