  2. How do you build an e-commerce site? • Know your target audience • Know your product • Know your competition • Research what selling methods are out there

Ways to sell online . . . . • Sell through another service, like: ebay, amazon, etsy, craiglist, buy.com, • Have your own website • List/sell your products • Shopping cart • Process payments • Shipping • Attract and retain customers • Return policy • Taxes • Security • Email newsletter & customer incentives

  4. What is process to develop an e-commerce website? • Use the SDLC (page 208). • 1. Figure out what you need to do. (sell online) • 2. Investigate options (what are the choices) • 3. Choose an option and design/execute it. • 4. Implement the solution – make it work • 5. Maintain the system, backups, Is it secure, and examine for further improvements

  5. Who builds it? • Hire someone, staff, contract, outsource, insource, offshore • Do it yourself? • Small scale or large? Either one make sure it fits.

  6. If we build it ourselves . . . • Software? • Yahoo/amazon/ebay store templates. • Hosting services with e-commerce: bluehost, godaddy, 1&1.com • Self-hosted: os-commerce, opencart,

Hosting, domain names, etc. • What is a domain name? • Example.com • Go to godaddy or similar service to purchase • What is hosting? • A service that holds the files that makes your website or e-commerce system • E-commerce software? • Adds on to your hosting. Is basically a CMS (Content management system) – a website powered by scripting and a database • Run on-site -

  8. How do I process payments? • Credit/debit cards, e-checks, paypal, google wallet, etc. • Payment gateways – attach to your site and send credit card info to validate and send to bank. • New services – square, paypal

  9. How do we get people to buy our stuff online? • SEO – Search Engine Optimization • Create wikipedia page, a social media presence, a google+ profile, submit yourself to search engines, add to yourself to directories • Blogs, tweets, microblogs (tumblr), instagram, • Youtube, • Ads online, pay-per-click, ad words • Email advertising • Physical ads, radio, tv, newspaper, billboards

  10. Security issues • Nothing is 100% secure. • Internal security is the biggest problem. • Credit card information • Private customer information, passwords • Content stealing, Illegal downloads • Malicious attacks, denial of service attack, spam, hacking,

  11. How can you assure security? • Up to date virus/malware protection • Secure passwords • Firewalls • Strict security protocols • Educate about phishing, virus scams, bad emails, bogus links and messages
