Summer Operations Highlights • Boston & Hartford Weather Pattern: • June temperatures were average with above normal precipitation • July & August temperatures were above normal with below normal precipitation. • Twenty-six week days during the period with temperatures 90 degrees or above • Peak Load • June - 23,152 MW, 6/27/02, HE 16 • July - 25,008 MW, 7/23/02, HE 15 • August - 25,715 MW, 8/14/02, HE 15

  6. Summer Operations Highlights • Provided shared activation of reserves (SAR) -- June - 3 times • July - 9 times • August - 0 times • Called for shared activation of reserves (SAR) -- June - 2 times • July - 2 times • August - 0 times

  7. August 14, 2002 – OP# 4 day • Forecast 24,575 MW, HE 17 • Reserve sharing available • Morning Report Surplus 700 MW • OP #4 actions not forecasted • Actual peak 25,715 MW, HE 15 • New all time peak • OP #4 implemented (except in Maine) • Actions 1 & 11 13:37 to 16:30

  8. REMVEC Summer Operations

  9. Peak load of 13604 MW on August 14, 3.15% increase over 2001. • Load exceeded 12000 MW on 18 days. • REMVEC declared M/S#2 for eastern Massachusetts on 3 occasions.

  10. Fire hoses used to lower operating temperatures on transformers at Ward Hill and Sandy Pond. • Voltage improvements over past year paid off as only problems were in NE Massachusetts.

  11. August 21 loss of 339, 349 and Golden Hills bus due to a transformer fault resulted in M/S#2 in Eastern Massachusetts. • August 27 loss of 339, 349 and Golden Hills bus due to a ground on 349X M/S#2 in Eastern Massachusetts.

  12. Generation changes • New Boston 1 retired July1 • Block 8 at Mystic delayed until September.

  13. New Hampshire Summer Operations

  14. Set new load peak twice in July, 3 times in August. • Peak load on August 14th of 1953 MW was 126 MW higher than 2001.

  15. High temperatures on Scobie Pond Transformer August 13-15th for the first time eve. • Special measures implemented to cool transformer. • PSNH prepared to shed up to 150MW on loss of Scobie Transformer to protect Deerfield auto.

  16. August 19th Scobie Auto event • Trip caused by bird on 13.8kv terminal. • OOS 0713-1810 • Caused temporary load interruption. • PSNH opened 115kv to Mass & Western NH.

  17. Generation Changes • CONED Newington testing aggravates Seabrook South interface.

  18. Maine Summer • Operations

  19. August 14 Maine Peak load of 1541 MW. • All instances of OP#4 in New England exclude Maine due to congestion. • Congestion an everyday occurrence in Maine.

  20. Significant Events • June 5 – Bucksport over current SPS operation opened 115kv lines & tripped Bucksport & Independence generators. • July 1 – Mason Cap bank lightning arrestor failure. • No major voltage problems experienced.

  21. CONVEX Summer • Operations

  22. CONVEX peak load of 8028 MW & Connecticut peak load of 6861 MW occurred on July 3. These are both slightly less than the 2001 peaks.

  24. Level 1 EEAs for July & August • IMO 13 • PJM 15 • NYISO 2

  25. Level 2 EEAs for July & August • IMO 7 • PJM 2 • NYISO 1

  26. Hydro Quebec & Maritimes experienced no significant problems.
