  2. Description “Trees connect us to forever. We seem to understand that on the deepest of levels, but our timing is off. We need to understand it on the shallow level, too, and redeem the offer while it’s still valid. That’s what this book is about.—Samual Thayer Praise for TREES OF POWER A few of our Arboreal Allies Apple : The Magnetic Center There is more to apple trees than you or I know. There are dozens of species around the world in the Malus genus. They can grow in swamps or rocky outcrops bearing fruit the size of a pea or a large potato. Skin color can be yellow, green, red, orange, and even blue. Both white flesh and red flesh are possibilities. Flavor can be horribly bitter, puckeringly astringent, candy sweet, or complex and tart in ways supermarket consumers never know. But the apple tree is much more than its fruit. These trees are complex organisms with their own unique personalities and ecological roles. Hickory : Pillars of Life Hickory trees are special. They have tremendous character. From the sprouted nut they will dive down 3 feet before the top is 6 inches tall. Hickory silhouettes in winter will give anyone good reason to pause and look at the sky. There is nothing like the shape of their branches zigzagging back and forth toward the radiant veil of infinity. Chestnut: The Bread Tree There are legends of a time when manna fell from the sky, and people could just pick up all the food they needed. Mature chestnut trees are pretty close to making that story a modern day reality. Chestnuts can live for thousands of years and rain down dependable annual crops. They are magnets for wildlife, staples in several cultures, as magnificent as an oak, provide quality, durable timber, and are real epicenters of life. A note from the author We can be the caretakers. We have tremendous tools at our disposal, tools for digging, communication, and travel. We can share seeds from around the world and engage in some of the most remarkable breeding programs. Knowledge can be spread from one insightful person to millions of others. We can dig ponds and plant trees at a rate that surpasses any other civilization in the history of the world by a thousandfold. We can choose to use our powers to enhance diversity, deepen soils, and spread abundance. We have the tools. The time is ripe. People are starving for meaningful work. There is plenty to do. No time for self pity or blame. It is time to plant trees.
