  3. 2. 8 themes of action (1) Preparation: Select irrigated areas; performance assessment; tailoring, prioritizing and set objectives of interventions. • Locally adapted improved varieties of fruits vegetables and fodder: seeds and seedlings multiplication, nurseries. • Increase labor productivity: farming equipments for soil preparation, modern irrigation technologies • Irrigation pumps: linkages with suppliers of pumps and after sales service, O&M, pump rental services • WUAs: by-laws and governance, O&M, financial management for improved maintenance, efficient and fair water use and irrigation cost recovery – Irrigation extension service.

Farming systems and crop-livestock integration: cropping patterns and crop rotation, staggered planting, introduction of irrigated forage, use of manure, crop residues, ecologically intensive technologies. 7. Integrated pest and diseases management (year 2) 8. Quality of commodities and reaching markets: grading and packaging, bulking, linkages including contract farming.

Knowledge management & CB • Training staff and farmers to address knowledge gaps • Coaching and mentoring of staff, coops, WUAs, selected farmers • Demonstration in farms or FTCs • Exhibitions (pumps, modern irrigation technologies, farming equipments) • Field visits and study tours to innovative farmers, well managed WUAs and coops in and outside LIVES zones.

Research 4 development (1) Rapid assessments Performance assessment of existing irrigation systems EIA of existing and potential irrigation development Gender disaggregated assessment; men and women participation and benefits of irrigation development Assessment of entry points and acceptance of irrigated fodder Water productivity and water use efficiency assessments

Research 4 development (2) Action research Participatory action research on improved organizational, institutional and technical operation and maintenance of irrigation systems - watersheds (service provision). Action research on technologies: • Low cost, water-saving irrigation technologies • New fruit, vegetable and fodder varieties • New agronomic practices, livestock integration, etc. • Integrated pest management (IPM) Action research on inputs supply: seeds, seedlings, fertilizers and pesticides, irrigation pumps, etc.
