  5. Terrestrial Biomes • Biomes are classified according to the characteristics of: • plants, • animal species, • temperature, • precipitation

TUNDRA • South of polar ice caps in North America, Europe, Siberia and Asia (Northern Hemisphere) • Treeless; permanently frozen soil called permafrost • Temperature Range: -34 to 12 degrees C • Animals: caribou, polar bears, birds, insects, wolves, salmon, trout • Plants: short grass and shrubs • Abiotic Factors: soggy summers, cold and dark most of the year

BOREAL FOREST • South of tundra in North America, Europe, and Asia • Evergreen Forests • AKA: Northern Coniferous Forest or Taiga • No permafrost Layer • Temperature: -54 to 21 degrees C • Plants: spruce and fir, some deciduous trees, small trees • Animals: birds, moose, beavers, deer, wolverine, mountain lions • Abiotic Factors: short, moist summers; long cold dry winters

Temperate Forest • Southeastern Canada, eastern US, most of Europe, parts of Asia, and Australia • Mostly deciduous trees • Temperature Range: - 30 to 30 degrees C • Plants: Oak, beech, and maple trees, shrubs, grasses • Animals: squirrels, rabbits, skunks, birds, deer, foxes, black bears • Abiotic factors: well-defined seasons, hot summers, cool winters

Temperate Woodland/Shrubland • Surrounding the Mediterranean Sea, west coasts of North and South America, South Africa and Australia • Temperature: 10 to 40 degrees C • Plants: evergreen shrubs and small trees • Animals: foxes, jackrabbits, birds, bobcats, coyotes, lizards, snakes, butterflies • Abiotic Factors: hot and dry summers; cold and wet winters

  15. Desert • Every continent EXCEPT Europe • Temp: High 20 to 49 Degrees C; Low -18 to -10 degrees C • Plants: cacti, Joshua Trees, succulents • Animals: lizards, bobcats, birds, tortoises, rats, antelopes, desert toads • Abiotic: varying temps; low rainfall
