  1. Personalisation and Quality First Teaching

  2. Personalising learning is… • Learner-centred and knowledge-centred • Learning is connected to what they know including from outside the classroom • Teaching enthuses pupils and engages their interest • Learners are active and curious • Work is sufficiently varied and challenging to maintain engagement From: 2020 Vision report of the teaching and learning review group Ref: 04255-2006DOM-EN

  3. PedagogyThe National Strategies have developed the following working definition… • Pedagogy is the act of teaching and the rationale that supports the actions that teachers take. It is what a teacher needs to know and the range of skills that a teacher needs to use in order to make effective teaching decisions.

  4. There is a strong connection between developing this shared view of pedagogy and the concept of ‘personalised learning’.

  5. Personalised Learning This framework describes the elements needed to ensure small groups, classrooms, schools and settings are developing personalised learning. Each element is essential. Each element has equal importance. Each element is interconnected. How children learn What children learn Assessing children’s achievement and their learning needs

  6. Special Educational Needs and Personalisation ‘Effective management, school ethos and the learning environment, curricular, pastoral and discipline arrangements can help prevent some special educational needs arising and minimise others.’ Special Educational Needs Code of Practice: DfES 581/2001 Paragraphs: 5.18 & 6.18

  7. Inclusion and Diversity(from Pedagogy & Personalisation (00126-2007DOM-EN) ‘One of the four main statutory purposes of the national curriculum is to establish learners’ entitlement irrespective of social background, culture, race, gender, differences in abilities and disabilities.’

  8. Inclusive Pedagogy(from Pedagogy & Personalisation(00126-2007DOM-EN) ‘Planning learning experiences and matching teaching approaches to learning needs is at the heart of personalised learning and is inclusive of all learners. However there are further factors that will influence the pedagogic approaches adopted by teachers when planning.’

  9. Quality First Teaching? • Do we have a shared understanding of what this means? • Do we have a clear view of what effective QF teaching for pupils with dyslexia and Speech Language and Communication needs looks like (see FLK units 1–8)?

  10. 2020 Vision Report Recommendations • The vision • The gaps in average attainment are reduced. • The system must focus more strongly on the progress of all pupils, not just those close to a particular threshold. • Propose the introduction of national and school-level targets for progression. • Entitlement to additional provision for all pupils at risk of falling behind. 2020 Vision Report Page 48
