  1. Equipment – Preparation and Analysis

  2. Introduction • Nitrox equipment – different • Higher oxygen content • Handling Nitrox • Oxygen service • Oxygen therapy • Dedicated equipment • Preparation • Analysis

  3. Equipment Cylinders identifiable: • Yellow • 10cm green band Label must show: • NITROX • EANx mix in cylinder • Maximum Operating Depth – MOD (max ppO2 1.4)

  4. Handling Nitrox • Oxygen supports combustion • Precautions under pressure • Petroleum based hydrocarbons • Explosive reaction

  5. Oxygen Service • Oxygen Service • Oxygen compatible components • Oxygen clean • > EAN 40 • Oxygen Compatible components + Oxygen Clean = OXYGEN SERVICE • Compressors • Qualified service agent

  6. Oxygen Therapy • Oxygen kits – 100% oxygen • In Oxygen Service • All component parts • Storage containers

  7. Dedicated Equipment • Filling method - cylinders • Final mix < EAN40 – standard regulator equipment • Regularly dive Nitrox • Dedicated equipment (for partial pressure only) • Precautions when filling with air • Partial pressure fills must use “Clean Air”

  8. Preparation FOR INFORMATION ONLY • Four ways: • By weight • By molecular filtration • By continuous blending • Partial pressure

  9. Weight & Filtration • By weight • Accurate – weight of gases • Expensive • Molecular filtration • Oxygen extracted by filtration • Up to EAN40

  10. Continuous Blending • Mix low pressure O2 + air • Mix EAN21 to EAN40 • Accurate & easy

  11. Partial Pressure • 100% Oxygen • Dilute with Clean Air • O2 service cylinder • Commercial Nitrox Suppliers

  12. Analysis • All nitrox divers must know how to analyse mix • Analysers – O2 flowing past sensor • Nitrox Log • filled by Blender sign, date, mix, cylinder • check analysis • Diver collecting must analyse mix and sign Log • Prior to dive mix should be analysed • “Analyse or Die” • Kevin Gurr 1994

  13. Analysis Procedure • Calibrate analyser • Connect to cylinder • Flow rate • Allow reading to stabilise • Mark cylinder with mix • Mark cylinder with MOD (Max ppO2 1.4) • Enter in Log • Sign

  14. Gas Analysis Always label cylinder & analyse prior to dive

  15. Summary • Nitrox equipment • Oxygen service • Dedicating equipment • Methods of preparation • Analysis
