  4. Act II Discussion Questions • Describe the primary center of tension in the encounter between John Proctor and Mary Warren. (End of Act II) • What is your impression of Elizabeth Proctor by the end of Act II? Of Reverend Hale? • How does Reverend Hale initiate the hysteria that closes the Act? • Describe the methods Miller uses to achieve the climatic build-up at the end of Act II. (Note: images, syntax, rhythm, special effects) • “Individual freedom versus social order” is one of Miller’s themes. Explain the message “The Crucible” is addressing regarding this theme.

  5. Proctor’s Speech • This act ends with Proctor’s words: “Now Hell and Heaven grapple on our backs, and all our old pretense is ripped away—make your peace! Peace. It is a providence, and no great change. We are only what we always were, but naked now. Aye, naked! And the wind, God’s icy wind, will blow!” • Write one or two well-developed paragraphs analyzing Proctor’s words. You should relate his words to what is going on in the play. Be sure to identify the rhetorical devices Miller uses in this speech: personification, irony, repetition. Be sure not only to identify these devices but to discuss their effectiveness in this speech.
