  2. What is it? • An abstract is a condensed form of a more extensive piece of writing • The purpose of the abstract is to convey the major or essential ideas of an in-depth study or document

  3. How Many Types are There? • There are two main types of abstracts, the Informative Abstract and Descriptive Abstract • While both types of abstracts strive to accomplish the same conveyance to the reader, several distinct differences are important to note

Abstracts: The Two Main Types Descriptive: • Is aimed at an individual reader to describe the major points of a document • Contains all the necessary background, purpose and focus of the document, but does not include any results, research methods or conclusions • Is most commonly seen in papers concerning liberal arts, humanities, and social sciences Informative: • Is aimed at a wide audience to describe all essential points of the document • Contains all the necessary background, purpose and focus as well as results, research methods and conclusions • Is most commonly seen in papers concerning engineering, sciences and psychology reports

Abstracts: The Ingredients to a Great One • The intention of the abstract should be to provide a general outline of the research document for the reader • The abstract should follow a similar organization hierarchy as the actual research document • Abstracts should be concise, accurate and contain no information not present in the document • Excessive technical information should be kept at a minimum in order to facilitate appeal to a general audience

Abstracts: How Can I write a Good one? • The abstract should be one of the last tasks completed in a report • Research document should be re-read thoroughly to extract all pertinent information that should be included in the abstract • Draft the abstract ensuring all key-points have been included • Edit the abstract in order to cut down on the redundancy • Compare the completed abstract with the original research document to ensure nothing has been added to the abstract not present in the original document
