  6. Prerequisites for Good Umpiring • 1. In shape. Umpires must be able to keep pace with the athletes. • 2. Good timing a must. • Come to a complete stop when making a decision. • 3. Knowledge of rules a must. • Necessary to know rules thoroughly • Basic fundamentals become second nature. • Guessing causes loss of confidence by others.

  7. 4. Mechanics • Essential in attaining the best coverage. • Anticipate plays and what can occur and be ready, take your time in calling the play. • Position and coverage should be covered in pregame with partner be it with a veteran umpire or a neophyte umpire. • Opt for angle over distance. • WTFB

  8. 5. Ignore hecklers from the stands. • Ignore them and they will go away. • If necessary, you have the authority to remove any person from the field if that person is causing major problems. • 6. Umpire must be loyal to his partner. • You are a crew, support each other. • Take care of your responsibility and don’t shift blame to make yourself look good.

  9. 7. Don’t draw attention to yourself in calling plays, don’t showboat. • Quiet dignity is much more effective in being a confident umpire. • 8. Proper attitude. • Be courteous but avoid visiting with either side. • No glad handing, especially after the game.

  10. 9. Hustle • Get into proper position and be alert for all plays. • Look like you want to be there at the game. • Rarely, if ever, cross arms-this looks like you are bored being there. • 10. Good judgement in decision making. • Let the play happen and then rule. • Don’t anticipate the out or safe call

  11. 11. Work with your partners. • Show respect for them • Be friendly • 12. Don’t infringe on others territory. • NEVER have 2 calls on one play, especially if the calls are different.

  12. Umpire the game and not the teams. • Please clean up any trash from your area that you may have left. A fair amount was left last week.

  13. Meet at Villa Nova tonight after our meeting. • Drive careful going home tonight due to our weather conditions.
