  1. By: Israa Beig Period 6/7 Mrs.Serrato Gary Paulsen

  2. Biography Gary Paulsen was born on May 17, 1939. He ran away at the age of 14 and travel with carnival. Paulsen had jobs as an engineer, construction worker, ranch hand, truck driver, sailor, sled driver and had brutal chores on a farm. Gray realized that he want to be a writer when he was at his job working as satellite technician at aerospace. The next year he spent in Hollywood as a magazine proofreader, and at the same time working on his writing. He drove to northern Minnesota and left California where he rented a cabin on a lake; by the end of the winter, he had completed his first novel. Paulsen eventually turned to the sport of dog racing, and entered the 1983 Iditarod. In 1985, after running the Iditarod for the second time, he suffered an attack of angina and was forced to give up his dogs. "I started to focus on writing the same energies and efforts that I was using with dogs. So we're talking 18-, 19-, 20-hour days completely committed to work. Totally, viciously, obsessively committed to work, the way I'd run dogs....I still work that way, completely, all the time. I just work. I don't drink, I don't fool around, I'm just this way....The end result is there's a lot of books out there."

  3. Theme • Book 2: Dogsong • Russell has to believe in himself that he will be able to live out on his own and find his song. • Book 1: The Haymeadow • John has to believe in himself that he can stay alone in the Haymeadow without human companionship and be able to take care of 3,000 sheep’ for 3 months. Summary: Gary Paulsen uses the same themes for most of his books. I sense that it relates to how Gary is looking for himself . I believe Paulsen theme is communicates to his life because it took lots of courage to believe in himself to run away from home. After he ran away I assume he never got his parents’ love again and he writes toward the theme of finding yourself and having the courage to believe in yourself. So Paulsen uses the themes to help him find himself in his stories. For example, The Haymeadow John doesn’t want to be away from his dad for 3 months taking care of sheep. I trust that Gary doesn’t want to be away from his family either. In most of the stories you read Paulsen uses the same two themes over again.

  4. Setting • Book 1: The Haymeadow • Out in Nature • Book 2: Dogsong • Out in Nature Summary: Gary Paulsen uses nature as his main setting in most of his books. It relates to how Gary looks for adventure in nature and how he loves to do outdoors activates. The way I believe Paulsen writes the setting in his stories is based on the feeling he had during an experience that he wants us to feel as well. So he use the place that the experience happened as his setting in his books. For example, for Dogsong the setting came from the experience he had when he was dog sledding in the IDITAROD race across Alaska. In most of the setting you read Paulsen uses nature to help form a feeling of adventure and urgency. He also keeps you predicting what is going to happen next. In both stories The Haymeadow and Dogsong the setting helps to form the story.

  5. Characters • Book 2:Dogsong • Russell is 14 years old and looking for a piece of himself his song that will complete him. Russell also needs the courage to believe that he can find his song on his own. • Book 1: The Haymeadow • John is looking for himself and trying to believe that he will be able to survive the 3 months by himself. He is 14 years old and trying to image himself as his grandpa to get through the months. Summary: Gary Paulsen uses young teenager boys as his main characters in most of his books. I believe it also relates to how Gary as a young boy looks for adventure and maybe that influence him to make teenager boys his main character in his stories. The way I believe Paulsen write his character in each of his stories is based on his experience he had as a teenager, but also because he wants his reader to feel the adventure the character is having. Gary might want the feeling of adventure still today so he takes his character and puts the character into a adventure to find itself. For example, The Haymeadow the character, John, came from the experience he had when he work as a ranch hand or when Paulsen did brutal chores on a farm. Most of the characters you read Gary uses his past experience to help form a feeling of adventure in his stories. The character are based on Paulsen past experiences he had in both stories The Haymeadow and Dogsong.

  6. Dialect • Book 2:Dogsong • Native Indian Language • Book 1: The Haymeadow • Country Framers Style Summary: Gary Paulsen uses the different dialect to use in his stories. I believe Paulsen writes the dialect in his stories is dialogue that he has spoken through his life.So he use the place that he the been to and the language from there in his books to help his readers understand the way people are in his stories. For instance, the dialect for The Haymeadow came from the dialect he spoke when Gary was a ranch hand and working on farms. In most of the books you read Paulsen uses dialect to help his readers form a feeling of time they are in and help them become a part of the book. From past experiences from working in different areas and job Gary formed the dialect for his books.

  7. Symbolism • Book 2: Dogsong • Dogs & Sled • Book 1: The Haymeadow • Rifle Summary: Gary Paulsen uses symbolism to symbol items that contribute to the importance of his books. It relates to Gary because he valued reading during his childhood and that became his symbol to start writing books and show the importance of doing what he wanted. The way I believe Paulsen symbolizes in his stories is based on the theme of the book and what time it takes place in. For example, the dogs and sled in Dogsong symbolizes the old way of living in Alaska by the Native Indians which is important to Russell. Sled. In most of the books you read Gary uses symbols to help form the importance of the book.

  8. Conflict • Book 2: Dogsong • Russell doesn’t feel right and he wants to find out what his song is. To find his song he has to go on a journey to the north west of his village by himself. • Book 1: The Haymeadow • John has to stay with the sheep for 3 months alone and care for them. The only problem is that he doesn’t think he will be able to do it. Summary: Gray Paulsen uses the same themes but makes different problems to solve them in his stories. He uses his past experiences to help him form a conflict in his books. For example, Gary use to work on a ranch and be a ranch hand and there he had to solve problems the occurred without complaining to his boss. Based on his experiences he forms conflicts for his stories.

  9. Irony • Book 2: Dogsong • Situational Irony • Russell thought he would find a child on the ground freezing but instead he found girl who was pregnant. • Book 1: The Haymeadow • Situational Irony • John had already killed a rattle snake to protect the sheep and again the sheep start panicking but this time the problem turns out to be a shrunk. Summary: Gary Paulsen uses Situational Irony in his works that I have read so far. In his life he had also had a Situational Irony which is that Paulsen was working as a satellite technician for aerospace when he realize that he wanted to be a writer. For instance, in Dogsong, Russell thought he would find a child on the ground freezing but instead he found girl who was pregnant.
