  1. Natural Disasters BY: Jasmine Bess

  2. Tsunami

  3. Tsunami are a series of waves caused by the movement on the seafloor. The movements are caused by earthquakes, landslides and volcanic eruptions. Also 90% of tsunami are caused by earthquakes. All tsunami have a really large mass of water, which become special waves. They can travel long distances without losing much energy. So the tsunami reaches the coast with a destructive and devastating force.

  4. hurricane

  5. A hurricane is a type of cyclone or severe tropical storm that forms in the Sothern Atlantic ocean, Caribbean sea, Gulf of Mexico, and in the Northern Hemisphere. A clockwise circulation of winds near earths surface. All Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico costal areas are subject to hurricanes. The Atlantic hurricane season last from June-November 30. Hurricanes can cause catastrophic damage to costlines and several hundred miles inland. Hurricanes can produce winds that can get up to 155 miles per hour like tornadoes.

  6. Tornadoes

  7. From powerful thunderstorms, tornadoes can cause deaths and devastate a neighborhood in seconds. A tornado looks like a rotating , funnel shaped cloud that extends from a thunderstorm to the ground with whirling wind that reach 300 miles per hour. Damage paths can be one mile wide and 50 miles long . Some tornadoes are clearly visible, while rain or nearby low hanging clouds hide others. Sometimes tornadoes develop so quickly that little if any warning is possible. Before a tornado hits, the wind may die down and the air may get very still. A cloud of debris can mark a location of a tornado even if a funnel cloud is not there. Tornadoes normally happen near the edge of a thunderstorm. It is not uncommon to see clear, sunlit skies behind a tornado.

  8. floods

  9. Some floods develop slowly, and others such as a flash flood can develop in just a few minutes without visible signs of rain. Also floods can be local, impacting a neighborhood or community. Flash foods can happen within a few minutes or hours of continuous rainfall, a levee failure, or sudden release of water held by an ice jam. Flash floods often have a dangerous wall of roaring water , carrying rocks, mud and other debris. Overland flooding is the most common type of event that happens when waterways such as rivers or streams overflow their banks as a result of rain water or a possible levee breach and cause flooring in surrounding areas. It can also occur when rain fall or snow melt goes over capacity of underground pipes, or the capacity of streets and drains that are designed to carry flood water away from urban areas.

  10. droughts

  11. Droughts are caused by loss of rain over a long period of time. If rain does occur it usually isn’t enough for the ground to absorb before it is evaporated again and animals need water to survive, so if there is not enough water they will eventually die from thirst and dehydration. Water is one of the main ingredients in the food chain. For example, If plant dies form no water then the animal that animal that eats the plant will also die, the cycle will continue until it dies out. Most droughts often happen during the summer, as the weather is hot and water is quickly evaporated . Droughts can last for years in most extreme cases. These types of droughts effect outback properties and can devastate crops and livestock.
