The Early Life of Charles Richter • He was born on April 26, 1900, near Hamilton, Ohio on a farm.( Oakes, 2007) • After his parents divorced he moved to live with his grandfather in Los Angeles in 1909. (Oakes, 2007) • Richter later attended the University of Southern California his freshman year before he transferred to Stanford University. This is where he received his A.B. in physics in 1920. And finally his doctoral work was conducted in theoretical physics at the California Institute of Technology and earned his Ph.D. in 1928. (Oakes, 2007)

  3. The Later Life of Charles Richter • In later years Richter worked for Caltech as a research assistant at the newly established Seismological Laboratory in Pasadena. (Oakes, 2007) • There he teamed up with Beno Gutenburg to develop an objective, quantitative scale for measuring and comparing earthquakes. (Oakes, 2007) • This most familiar measurement of the intensity of earthquakes is the Richter scale which was created in 1935 by Charles Richter and Beno Gutenburg. (Volti, 1999)
