  4. What is Judaism? • A living relationship between the Living God and His People… the Covenant • Summed up in the Shema

  5. Who is this God? • YHWH • “I Am Who Am”… the One Who Is • God is “Being Himself” • Name not pronounced (> “Adonai”= Lord) • God is personal • God is One and Only

  6. Torah • Literally “instruction” • Also means “law”, ie. Jewish Law • First 5 books of Bible • Pentateuch (from Greek) • Traditionally authored by Moses

  7. Torah • Thought to contain 613 laws • Refers to will of God • Revealed to all humankind • Scriptural (Tanakh) and oral (Mishnah and Talmud)

  9. Mishnah • Written c. 200 C.E. • Teachings (orally transmitted) of 4 centuries of Rabbis
