  7. Conversation Practice: Let’s Go Swimming • A: I got a flier saying that a swimming pool provides discount, and I am planning to go with Tom. Would you want to come down with us? • B: I don't think so. I hate swimming • A: Come on, it‘ll be fun. No one hates swimming. • B: I do. • A: Why? • B: I got plummy, my skin got tanned, and I have to take the risk of being drowned. • A: You don't know how to swim? • B: I can do a little breaststroke. • A: That would be enough, you don't really have to swim. You can just relax in the water, and ... • B: Prepare to drown. • A: Look the bright side, there’s always a lifeguard by a swimming pool. • B: Yeh and everyone would stare at me when the lifeguard yells "hang in there, I am coming"?  Ain't it funny? • A: But it's better for you to learn how to swim. • B: That's true. • A: Of course, and grabbing a tan is good too. You can apply the sunblock to avoid sunburn. • B: Alright, I will think about it anyway, thanks for asking.

Discussion Questions • What are the advantages of swimming as an exercise? • e.g. low impact – the water supports our weight; we can exercise without adding stress to our joints. • e.g. muscle training and fat burning. • e.g. a cool thing to do in summer. • What are the safety issues in swimming? • at a pool: e.g. watch for the depth marker on the side of the pool, be careful with the slippery floor. • at the sea: don’t swim beyond the security line, face the tide to avoid being caught by it off guard.
