  2. Satan’s Top 10 Greatest Hits Performance Orientation Pride Condemnation Unforgiveness Idolatry Wounds of Injustice Trials Stuck in the Flesh Instant Gratification Fear & Unbelief

  3. Galatians 1:9 • As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let them be under God’s curse!

  4. The Gospel is not a prayer you pray to get into heaven when you die.

  5. The Gospel is not a prayer you pray to get into heaven when you die. • Invitation to join Divine Community of Holy Love • Based on completed work of Cross • Yield all of your life in gratitude • Live in such a way as to persuade others to join you around His worthy throne

  6. Satan’s Top 10 Greatest Hits Performance Orientation Pride Condemnation Unforgiveness Idolatry Wounds of Injustice Trials Stuck in the Flesh Instant Gratification Fear & Unbelief

  7. 1. Performance Orientation • Lie: • I obey so God loves me. • Gospel: • God loves me so I obey.

  8. John 14:21 • Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me.

  9. 2. Pride • Lie: • My self-worth is based on how hard I work/how moral I am (so I look down on others who are lazy/immoral). • Gospel: • My identity and self-worth come from the One who died for me. Only by God’s grace am I what I am.

  10. James 4:6 • God opposes the proud but shows favor [grace] to the humble.

  11. Psalm 139:23-24 • Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. 24 See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

  12. 3. Condemnation • Lie: • I’m a failure compared to others and my own standards. • Gospel: • “We are more sinful and flawed in ourselves than we ever dared believe, yet at the very same time we are more loved and accepted in Jesus Christ than we ever dared hope.” • – Tim Keller

  13. Greatest sin of all: • Believing God accepts us on basis of our performance and doubting God’s character and integrity to save us simply because He loves us.

  14. “The knowledge that Jesus continues to enjoy us as we are maturing is a foundational truth that empowers us to mature.” • —Mike Bickle

  15. 4. Unforgiveness • Lie: • If I forgive someone else, I’m saying what they did to me was ok. • Gospel: • God forgives me for sinning against Him without condoning what I did. Forgiving closes the door to the enemy to work in my life.

  16. Ephesians 4:26-27 • “In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27 and do not give the devil a foothold.

  17. 5. Wounds of Injustice • Lie: • When I am hurt, I must take revenge and get even. • Gospel: • Though I have hurt God deeply, His judgment for my sin was paid in full at the cross, so He doesn’t have to take out revenge on me. Because of the cross, I can forgive others the same way I have been forgiven.

  18. Matthew 6:14-15

  19. Matthew 6:14-15 • For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

  20. 6. Idolatry • Lie: • What I do doesn’t matter because God’s grace covers everything. (It’s all about me and what I want.) • Gospel: • The grace of God is not a license to do wrong but empowerment to do what’s right! • (grace = desire & power to do God’s will)

  21. Titus 2:11-14 • For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. 12 It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, 13 while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, 14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.

  22. Ephesians 5:3-5 • But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people. 4 Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. 5 For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person—such a person is an idolater—has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

  23. 7. Trials • Lie: • Negative circumstances and trials are punishment for what I did wrong because God is angry at me. • Gospel: • Jesus willingly paid the penalty for my sin, and I no longer owe God. God is not my circumstances; but He can redeem adverse circumstances to help me be more like Jesus.

  24. James 1:2-4 • Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

  25. Psalm 23:4 • Even though I walk through the darkest valley, • I will fear no evil, for you are with me; • your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

  26. 8. Instant Gratification • Lie: • I need to do what feels good nowto be happy. • Gospel: • The way of the cross (death to what self wants) alwaysleads to resurrection and ultimate fulfillment.

  27. Hebrews 12:1-2 • And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

  28. Hebrews 12:11 • No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.

  29. Hebrews 12:11 • No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. • discipline desire  delight

  30. 9. Stuck in the Flesh • Lie: • I will forever be stuck in the failure of my flesh!

  31. Romans 7:18 • For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature [flesh]. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.

  32. 9. Stuck in the Flesh • Lie: • I will forever be stuck in the failure of my flesh! • Gospel: • God does not expect me to deliver myself; I can ask Him to live His life through me!

  33. Romans 8:1 • Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.

  34. Romans 6:11-14 • In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. 12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. 13 Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness. 14 For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace.

  35. “Sin doesn’t die to you; you die to it.” • —Joyce Meyer

  36. 2 Corinthians 4:7 • But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.

  37. 10. Fear & Unbelief • Lie: • I’ve failed, and God is going to come down hard on me • Gospel: • God’s perfect love casts out fear, even when I fail. He saved me because He loves me—not because I impressed Him and He now feels obligated to help me.

  38. 1 John 4:19 • There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.

  39. Because Daddy Loves Me • Because Daddy loves me, He is for me. He wants to see me mature and develop in His love. • Because Daddy loves me, He does not send down His wrath on every little mistake I make of which there are many. Though He is grieved, He does not reject me or turn His back on me when I sin. • Because Daddy loves me, He does not keep score of all my sins and then beat me over the head with them whenever He gets the chance.
