  1. Metric Units of Length, Mass, and Volume

  2. The Metric System • The metric system of measurement is a decimal system that uses prefixes to relate the sizes of units to standard units. • The standard unit of length is the meter. • The standard unit of mass is the gram. • The standard unit of volume is the liter.

  3. Metric Prefixes But, how are you supposed to remember these? King Henry died by drinking chocolate milk.

  4. Converting Units in the Metric System BIGGEST SMALLEST When going from a bigger unit to a smaller one, move the decimal point the same number of spaces you move on the chart above to the RIGHT. When going from a smaller unit to a bigger one, move the decimal point the same number of spaces you move on the chart above to the LEFT.

  5. Let’s look at a few examples… Convert 15 centimeters to millimeters Since we are going from a bigger unit to a smaller one, we will move the decimal point to the right. We are moving one space, so 15 centimeters becomes 150 millimeters. Convert 7.5 milliliters to kiloliters Since we are going from a smaller unit to a bigger one, we will move the decimal point to the left. We are moving 6 spaces, so 7.5 becomes 0.0000075.

  6. TRY THESE!! 3.070 • 3,070 millimeter = _______ meters • 586 centigrams = _______ grams • 6.4 kiloliters = _______ liters • 0.04 meters = _______ centimeters • 120 milligrams = _______ grams 5.86 6,400 4 .120

  7. TRY THESE!! > f) 12 meters .01 kilometers g) 13.4 centiliters .134 liters h) 50 dekagrams 5,000 grams = <
