  1. Female Reproductive Anatomy

  2. Ovaries • Primary female sex organ • Produce hormones • the Estrogens • Progesterone • Ovarian Follicles (in ovarian cortex): • Contain oocytes (immature sex cells) • approx. 1 million present at birth • each month adult females eject one oocyte from the ovary rupturing the follicle (ovulation) • after ovulation the remains of the follicle form the hormone-secreting corpus luteum

  3. Fallopian Tubes • form the beginning of the female duct system • each tube is 10 cm long and extends from the ovary to the uterus • fertilization occurs in the enlarged portion of the tube (ampulla) • the tubes end in finger like projections (fimbriae) that drape over the ovary • lined with ciliated cells to move oocyte or zygote towards uterus • ectopic pregnancy embryo implants in the tube • naturally aborts • results in severe pain and considerable bleeding

  4. Uterus • Composed of: • Body • Fundus • Cervix • Layers of the Uterus: • Myometrium: the muscle layer (causes cramps) • Endometrium: inner layer lost during menstruation

  5. Vagina • thin walled tube between the bladder and the rectum • the opening to the vagina blocked by an incomplete partition (the hymen)

  6. External Genitals • Mons Pubis: fatty rounded area over the pubic symphysis • Clitoris: covered by a prepuce and contains erectile bodies • Urethra: • Labia: the labia majora are elongated fatty skin folds that enclose the labia minora

  7. Accessory Glands • Breasts: • Lactiferous ducts drain at the nipple • Vestibular Glands: • Secrete a mucus-like lubricating fluid
