  1. Literacy Focus Aims: To understand the rules of how to use the literacy focus in your work. To become aware of the importance of using the literacy focus accurately in your work in every lesson. To understand the school marking code.

  2. How it works You will notice a poster displaying the literacy focus in every classroom. This is to remind you of the rules and to make sure you are using the literacy focus accurately every lesson. Your use of the literacy skill in lessons will be monitored by your teachers. If your teacher notices you using the literacy focus incorrectly, they will mark your book accordingly and will expect you to correct it. familiarise yourself with the marking code on the next page.

  3. Literacy Focus Term 1 Basic Punctuation: Capital letters and full stops The next slide will give you an example of a sentence that has not used capital letters and full stops correctly. The corrected version of the sentence will appear beneath. Your form tutor will go through the rules you need to follow on the next slide to make sure you are using capital letters and full stops correctly.

  4. Example: Capital Letters and Full Stops. in september, laura and i are going to see blood brothers in london In September, Laura and I are going to see Blood Brothers in London. A capital letter must always be used at the beginning of a sentence – The dog wouldn’t stop barking. A capital letter must be used for all proper nouns such as names, places and titles – Sarah, Wales, The Hunger Games. A capital letter must be used for the pronoun ‘I’. A capital letter must be used for days of the week and months of the year – Monday, June. A capital letter must be used for abbreviations – RSPCA, ICT, BBC. A full stop must come at the end of every complete sentence.
